A24 Ignites Horror Scene with Talk 2 Me Sequel

A. Prentice

A24 continues its dominant march in the independent filmmaking terrain by gearing up for the horror sequel, Talk 2 Me, aligning with the Philippou brothers, Danny and Michael. The sequel comes at the heels of a successful run of Talk to Me, this summer's breakout horror sensation.

The sequel is set to be penned by Danny Philippou and Bill Hinzman, with the director's baton in the hands of Danny and Michael Philippou once again. Speaking to Deadline prior to the original's release, Danny Philippou gleamed upon the potential of a sequel and the cultivation of further narrative in the spine-chilling universe of Talk to Me.

The original horror flick was housed and championed by A24 from Sundance's Midnight section and has come to be a resounding financial and critical success. The movie has generated $22M as of now, making it one of the highest-grossing horror productions by A24. To put the astronomical figures in perspective, Talk to Me's revenue surpasses Ari Aster's Midsommar ($17.3M), has exceeded last summer's Bodies Bodies Bodies ($11.4M) and is soon predicted to outclass The Witch's run ($25.4M). Despite being currently 22% behind the domestic total of A24's horror record-holder, Hereditary ($44M), Talk to Me's traction shows no sign of tapering.

The original film is a product of the collaborative efforts of Causeway Films' Samantha Jennings and Kristina Ceyton. Not departing from successful collaborations, Talk 2 Me will be added to A24's catalog of horror franchises, including Ti West's X trilogy. The upcoming chapter in the horror trilogy, MaXXXine, boasts a lineup including Mia Goth, Halsey, Elizabeth Debicki, Moses Sumney, and Michelle Monaghan.

A24 reaped a whopping nine Oscar wins, the highest for any studio this year, all thanks to the extensive reach and appeal of Everything Everywhere All at Once, which walked away with seven statuettes, including Best Picture. After making waves at the Sundance premiere of Talk to Me, The Philippous got signed by the talent agency WME in January.

Now shifting gears from the facts to my take on this, fasten your seatbelt, dear readers. Talk about a dynamite team! A24 with the Philippous is like Spielberg with a shark or Burton with a fairy tale interpretation - provoking tremors in Hollywood’s seismic plates.

Remember when we thought Midsommar was a game-changer with its daylit nightmares? Think again, because the Philippous have infused fresh blood (quiet literally) into horror, making us shiver in the midst of sun-kissed Aussie locales.

Danny Philippou's mention of "writing other scenes" hints at the multi-layered puzzle that Talk 2 Me could be. What's next? Fully sentient hands having conversations one-on-one over a cuppa joe in suburban Sydney?

Talk to Me's massive success adds another jewel to A24's already dazzling crown. The indie powerhouse isn’t just playing with the big boys; it's rearranging the furniture, painting the walls, and planting the flag in Tinseltown territory.

Alas, the world of sequels is both promising and perilous. One can only hope that Talk 2 Me doesn’t become just another horror follow-up that sinks into the sequel swamp, forgetting its wit and originality in the sequel's bog.

Perhaps, the ghostly hands of Talk to Me have more in store for us than just another sequel. Only time, the Philippous, and A24 can tell. Until then, its lights, camera...and screams!
