AI Proposal Stirs Tinseltown Tensions: SAG-AFTRA Pushes Back on AMPTP's Groundbreaking Plan

A. Prentice

After the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) labeled their artificial intelligence (AI) proposal to the Screen Actors Guild ‐ American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) as "groundbreaking," the actors' union National Executive Director and chief negotiator, Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, remains unconvinced. Speaking outside Disney Studios today, joining SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher in their round of studio tours, Crabtree-Ireland remained skeptical about the agreement.

His concerns relive around the protections (or lack thereof) for background performers. He maintains that the companies are refusing to address that people cannot be expected to sign over rights to their names, images, likenesses, voices, and personas without the right to oversee future usage. Crabtree-Ireland insisted that the agreement in its current form is unacceptable and that the companies need to draft an arrangement that aligns better with the interests and rights of the actors.

AMPTP had previously stated that their proposal would provide sufficient protection for performers' digital likenesses, including a necessary consent for any creation or use of digital replicas or any digital alterations of performances. SAG-AFTRA, however, remains defiant, calling for a significant reevaluation of the proposal and denouncing the “groundbreaking” AI concept presented.

In the perspective of potential financial repercussions of the strike, Crabtree-Ireland hopes viewers will express their support and solidarity on social media and reconsider the companies they continue to engage with. He also emphasized that the surge for labor solidarity and fair treatment of workers is more potent than ever.

Despite the concerns of some actors about how SAG-AFTRA will tackle streaming platforms pulling content from their services in the latest AMPTP contract talks, Crabtree-Ireland stated their focus is more on distributing the streamers' revenue rather than pinpointing specific projects, and there has been no word from AMPTP to return to talks since they halted last Wednesday.

Now, in the land of Hollywood where blockbusters are created and torn apart alike on the anvil of public opinion, an AI proposal vaulted onto center stage, auditioning for the role of the revolutionary protagonist, but alas, it flounders amidst the skepticism of the actors' guild. I say, a stage left exit seems imminent.

Dressed in the shining armor (or more fittingly, a flashy suit), the AMPTP walks in with a smoking gun, an AI proposal to shape the future of industry. And yet, the hero's arrival is met with a bucket of cold water from the stalwart SAG-AFTRA, steadfast in their intent to protect the rights and likenesses of their members. In Tinseltown, the scripts are ever-changing, and the story of AI in the industry is taking a dramatic turn indeed.

Crabtree-Ireland, akin to a cinematic underdog, calls for viewers’ electronic solidarity, reminding us of the age-old adage that the audience makes the show. In an era defined by hashtag trends and viral momentums, digital laudanum can strike deeper than physical rallies.

And where the plot thickens with suspense, we see the humble streamer caught in the crossfire. Caught between their thirst for content and their respect for the artist, streamers, ladies and gentlemen, have been thrust into the veritable battleground of industry politics.

In this riveting saga, only time can pen the plot twists, as we wait in anticipation for AMPTP's next act. It's a cliffhanger, folks, and the next sequence is yet to roll. Hold on to your popcorn!
