AMPTP and SAG-AFTRA Clash Over Contract Proposals Amid Actors' Strike
The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) has challenged the Screen Actors Guild - American Federation of Television and Radio Artists' (SAG-AFTRA) depiction of their proposals prior to the breakdown of contract negotiations and the subsequent actors' strike that began a week ago. This response came after SAG-AFTRA revealed a document on July 17 titled "SAG-AFTRA Negotiations Status as of July 13, 2023", portions of which, according to the AMPTP, misrepresent their original offers or overlook key factors. To counter this chart, the AMPTP has published a version of it, offering their interpretation of each item.
Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, SAG-AFTRA’s National Executive Director and Chief Negotiator, responded to AMPTP's claims. "We will respond to this latest round of AMPTP spin when we review their document. We unequivocally stand by the accuracy of everything we have said regarding the proposals," he stated. As it stands, SAG-AFTRA's claims for wage increases were contested by AMPTP, who assert that their offer is unprecedented and would generate a significant increase in wages over the next three years.
Regarding artificial intelligence (AI), another critical issue, the AMPTP claims it aims to achieve a balanced approach based on cautious utilization, not prohibition. This statement follows SAG-AFTRA's call for comprehensive provisions to safeguard human-created work and mandate informed consent and fair remuneration when a performer has been digitally replicated or significantly altered using AI. Conversely, the AMPTP alleges that they agreed to establish such provisions, but the union failed to respond to their last counter concerning AI.
