AMPTP and SAG-AFTRA Clash Over Wage and AI Proposals Amid Actors' Strike

A. Prentice

Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) and SAG-AFTRA are currently embroiled in a dispute over what the former party claims is a "misleading" representation of proposals prior to the actors' strike that began a week ago. According to the AMPTP, "substantial portions" of the chart that SAG-AFTRA issued on July 13, 2023, are either misinterpretations of the producers’ offer or leave out important aspects.

In response to SAG-AFTRA's chart, the AMPTP has released its own chart which outlines their outlook on each of the issues mentioned in SAG-AFTRA’s original chart. SAG-AFTRA's stance on the proposals remains unchanged, as Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, SAG-AFTRA’s National Executive Director and Chief Negotiator, reiterated in a statement.

The SAG-AFTRA guild peddles for an 11% hike in general wages in the first year of the new contract, followed by 4% hikes for the second and third years. On the other hand, the AMPTP claims that the guild has not highlighted their “historic” offer which would generate over $717 million in wage increases over three years.

The AMPTP further states that their intent from the outset has been to negotiate a contract that is fair and balanced for all SAG-AFTRA members. This includes addressing the evergreen issue of artificial intelligence. While the guild has voiced concerns over rights and fair compensation regarding the use of performers' digital replicas, the AMPTP brings to light that they have proposed measures to address these.

In case anyone was under the impression that Hollywood was all glitz, glamour, and easy money, this news highlights the trenches of negotiation in the entertainment jungle.

Now, regarding the wages, I can't help but think of my math teacher when I was twelve (who said I would use percentages in real life - you owe me an apology, Mrs. Becker). If I'm reading the numbers right, SAG-AFTRA is arguing for their members to get an 11% increase, compared with what appears to be a 5% increase from the AMPTP. Negotiations 101, folks - always ask for more than you expect to get, hope for more than what the other party is offering, and negotiate in good faith from there.

Moving onto the hot topic of artificial intelligence, it's worth noting the mixed bag that AI is proving to be in the entertainment industry. On the bright side, imagine the horror stories and logistical challenges that could be avoided by replacing an unruly actor with a digital doppelganger. On the flip side - could digital mannequins rob actors of their jobs?

Humor aside, it's reassuring to see the subject of AI cropping up in these negotiation talks and shows the industry is attempting to grapple seriously with rapid technology advancement. Life-sized pixel versions of actors bring about a maze of ethical, legal, and financial questions that require serious attention. I, for one, am curious to see how "Sophia the Robot" would fare in an Oscar-award-winning role...

Finally, the play of dissension between SAG-AFTRA and AMPTP is not a one-act drama. Let's not forget that we are witnessing a dialogue carried out in public. Each party is playing to the audience that is the public, and to its members, and probably looking to the court of public opinion to pressure the other into capitulation. Whether that’s sagacious or leaves everyone sagging under a cloud of acrimony - time will tell.
