Brad Pitt Halts F1 Film "Apex" Amid SAG Strike
Brad Pitt, the renowned Hollywood actor and producer, has reportedly brought production of his Formula One film, "Apex", to a halt in a show of solidarity with the ongoing Screen Actors Guild (SAG) strike. This comes as news from a source in the UK, stating that the Oscar-winning actor is currently based in Europe but has called off production until further notice.
According to The Sun, while existing shooting engagements were completed, the planned production for the coming two months has been postponed. The "Apex" cast and crew, initially filming in Budapest, Hungary, were informed of the decision to postpone future shootings in response to the strike.
Delaying production comes with significant financial implications, but it appears Pitt is keen to show solidarity with those involved in the strike. As affirmed by the source, “Postponing the production was a massive call, especially financially, but Brad has listened to the concerns of the people he works with and wants to show his support.”
Following up on this, another source confirmed to Deadline that the crew, which was scheduled to film at The Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps (or simply, "Spa") in Belgium this weekend, will no longer be proceeding. Notably, this is happening during Belgium's real-life Grand Prix set to take place on Sunday.
Pitt, not just the star but also the producer of the film, is working alongside former world champion Lewis Hamilton. The team was recently seen at the British race at Silverstone in England, where Pitt partook in the F1 drivers' race briefing and demonstrated his track skills, reaching speeds of an impressive 150 mph. The crew's next shooting plans are scheduled in Las Vegas in November, by which time they hope for a resolution of the ongoing tension among writers, actors, and film studios.
And now, for my very own pit stop - get it? Pit stop? Because it’s a Formula One film? Okay, perhaps my wit needs a tune-up...
Anyway, on a more serious note, the stand taken by Pitt, an industry behemoth who rides the waves rather than getting carried away by them, surely puts things into perspective. It emphasizes that no matter how adorned or successful you become in Hollywood - or rather, because of it - using your influence to advocate for fair treatment, even when it comes at a financial cost, is critical.
It may seem that, like a carefully planned pit stop, putting "Apex" on hold will disrupt the rhythm of the race - I mean, filming. But looking at the bigger picture, this isn't just about a missed Belgian shoot or the postponed filming schedules. It's about standing up for what one believes in and supporting those who strive to make the industry a fair and sustainable environment for all.
And that is, after all, 'the stuff' great films - and even more so, great actors - are made of. So, as Pitt puts it all on the line and parks his ‘car’ in the ‘pit’ (okay, I'll stop now), what remains to be seen is whether this bold move will help steer the industry towards a much-needed resolution.
Whether you're a race car driver navigating sharp turns at breakneck speed or an actor juggling intense filming schedules - these professions aren't for the faint-hearted. And just like an unexpected pit stop can change the course of a race, a delay in filming just might change the course of Hollywood. Full throttle to that!
