But beyond just being able to take pretty photographs, cinematographers have additional training that goes far beyond photography basics.

Do I have the right equipment?

Understanding lighting
A key part of cinematographic storytelling is light. Lighting can aid in defining space, highlighting important elements (like characters or objects), and creating moods.
Light comes from many sources- natural sunlight, street lights, movie studio lamps, and other forms of illumination like flashlights, candles, etc. Different types of light are used for different purposes.
For example, bright direct sunlight is typically used to illuminate people or places, while a candle is an effective source of ambient light. The intensity of each type of light needs to be adjusted so that it does not over power other lights or distort what being illuminated looks like.
In filmmaking, there are two main types of light: natural light and artificial light. Natural light is dependent upon where you happen to be filming and how well weatherproof your equipment is. Artificial light is produced by tools such as portable generators, battery packs, or external camera flashes.
