D Hollywood Agency
As of late, there have been many reports about top entertainment agencies actively seeking to poach other agency’s agents. Some sources even claim that some big name talent representatives are offering significant bonuses to agents in order to switch teams.
While this is very unfortunate to see happening at such a crucial time for independent representation, it is also quite clear that these agents are not working for enough money.
In fact, most people cannot make a living as an agent unless they are willing to work long hours with little-to-no compensation. It is common knowledge that agents earn far less than what their advertisements say they do, if they are paid at all!
It seems like every day we read or hear something new about how much lower paying your own team is, and how difficult it can be to win clients away from bigger firms.
As more and more stories emerge, one gets the sense that overall employee satisfaction has plummeted across the board. Employees are constantly stressed out and overworked, which clearly does not help them enjoy their jobs.
If you are ever asked to perform a task that goes beyond the scope of your job description, you will probably know why so many employees feel underpaid.
Luckily for aspiring professionals, independent representatives are now almost extinct. Independent reps are a dying breed.
Many reasons exist as to why this is the case, but none of them are good.
What is a management contract?

A management contract is when an artist hires someone to help them run their business or career. This person, known as a manager, takes care of all the day-to-day tasks such as booking appearances, finding new clients for you, and promoting your work.
Typically, artists hire managers at the very beginning stages of their careers, before they are successful enough to have more advanced contracts. After that initial stage, most artists retain the same manager until later in their career.
That’s why it can be tricky to find good managers. If you look hard enough though, you will! And don’t worry, some great ones are available to anyone with a creative mind and a passion for music. You just need to know where to look.
What is a sponsorship?

A sponsorship is when an outside party comes in to help fund or promote something for you. It can be through paying your bills, buying you a coffee, or paying to send you to a conference or event.
The more sponsors you have, the higher your profile becomes! This helps you get exposure and encourages people to connect with you.
It’s not always easy getting these types of sponsors, but don’t give up. There are many ways to do it, and it will grow your business over time.
There are two main reasons why most agencies don’t offer much beyond their own marketing services. First, most agency owners are just like me - they love what they do so much that they want to keep doing it. They don’t feel qualified to try and get other professionals involved in what they know.
Second, as entrepreneurs, we're usually in our heads too much to really focus on growing others.
What is a promotion?

A promotional item or material is anything that helps your business gain exposure for itself or your brand. It can be something like writing a short article about the benefits of your product, putting up billboards or posters around your area, creating social media posts to promote your products, etc.
The thing about promotions is they don’t always cost money! Creating an article and posting it on YouTube or publishing it on different sites such as blogs and magazines is free way to spread your message and increase traffic to your site and brands.
By doing this, you are also increasing engagement which is valuable content most people look at before making a purchase.
Interactive advertisements like showing pictures of your product along with testimonials is another great way to use a promo. People love reading good reviews so these ads usually get lots of likes and comments.
What is a film contract?

A movie contract is an agreement between your agent, filmmaker, and studio to represent you as a business professional with their agency. Your agent will negotiate your services into the contract with the help of the filmmakers or studios hiring them, and then work with the other party to ensure the terms are fair for you!
Most people agree that having an agent is a must when it comes to being successful in the entertainment industry. An agent can make or break your career by creating strong relationships with key individuals in the field, negotiating good contracts, and promoting your skills and talents.
But what exactly is a “contract” anyway? Some say it’s just like any other deal you would do outside of the industry, but not really. It's more than that. It’s something separate from you and someone else; it’s yours.
A lot of times, though, things in the industry seem to be done without formal contracts. This can sometimes create trouble later when there are disputes over who did what. In fact, some say this lack of formalized agreements is one of the main reasons why the entertainment business is so full of drama and bad feelings.
What is a script deal?

A lot of writers struggle with getting their work out there for people to read, which can be due to many things. Sometimes you just do not have anyone you know who would want to represent your work, so you go through the process alone.
There are some great ways to get your writing in front of people beyond trying to find an agent or manager yourself. Script deals are one of those strategies.
A script deal is when someone other than an agency hires you as an writer to rewrite parts of a screenplay they already have written. This person may ask you to edit only certain sections, like a scene, a chapter, or even the whole thing!
The writer hiring you will probably pay you more per page than what an agent would, and sometimes it’s a much needed boost in income. It also helps if they show how committed they are to creating their own story because that is something we all need to learn from.
What is a TV contract?

A television contract or deal is when an actor, actress, show, or production company hires your agency to represent you for certain roles or productions. This can be as simple as being hired as a guest star on a show, or having your major character die in a finale, so your agent represents you while promoting the show’s final season.
It’s important to note that not every acting job is considered a “television job.” Many people describe their jobs as televisonal but they are actually employed by a film studio, advertising firm, or digital platform like Netflix.
Some actors gain notoriety and success after landing a few small screen appearances, but it was those big name shows and movies that helped them grow into recognizable faces. An example of this would be Jennifer Lopez, who first became known for her dramatic work in films before transitioning into more comedic fare.
What is a brand partnership?

A brand partnership is when one company partners up with another to promote their product or service by featuring them as the main focus of the advertisement/media piece. It’s like having your own little celebrity!
A great way to gain exposure through a well-established brand is to produce content that is targeted towards the audience of the given brand. Create something that will add value to the existing collection of products or services, and upload it onto YouTube, Facebook, and/or Twitter.
What are residuals?
Residual income is the other kind of income you get to keep even after your working days have ended. This is dependent on how much influence you have in this field, what types of services you provide, and if you advertise yourself or others online.
Residual income can be generated from anywhere, it’ll just depend on your personal skills and strengths. Some people make good residual income giving speeches, while others make great money writing blogs and books. It all depends on who you are and what you're passionate about!
By offering your current skill set for sale, you earn royalties off of it. These are typically done through sites like Amazon where you can create an account and upload and sell your products.
There are also ways to make passive residual income by creating content online that earns revenue for someone else to collect. For example, if you are very artistic then you could offer your art for sale on various platforms such as ArtBase and RedBubble.
These businesses pay you per item sold with royalty checks every few months.
