"Deadpool 3" Halts as SAG-AFTRA Strikes, Jackman Returns as Wolverine
Lights dimmed and cameras paused on "Deadpool 3" as news broke of a production freeze following last night's decision by SAG-AFTRA to initiate strike action. This news was confirmed through insider sources in conversation with Deadline. Making headlines, the Marvel project is the most significant to date to be impacted by this recent wave of industrial action.
This cessation of production came hot on the heels of an intriguing sneak peek into "Deadpool 3" shared by actor Ryan Reynolds himself. The star uploaded a quick glimpse of the re-emergence of actor Hugh Jackman as Wolverine to his Instagram stories. Clad in the traditional black and yellow super-suit, Jackman is seen posturing alongside Reynolds in the now-paused third installment of the Deadpool franchise.
The return of Jackman marks his first reappearance since completing nine films as the adamantium-clawed mutant from the original X-Men series to Logan (2000-2017). His reappearance accompanies Jennifer Garner's return to the Marvel universe as Elektra, a role previously played in 2003's Daredevil. In the director's and producer's chairs, Shawn Levy steers this somewhat shrouded Marvel threequel. Further plot details are eagerly anticipated but remain tightly concealed. The script has been constructed by a star-packed team including Reynolds, Levy, Paul Wernick, Rhett Reese, and Zeb Wells. New to the franchise are Emma Corrin and Matthew Macfadyen who join the list of returning cast members.
The film's production team includes Levy and Reynolds, along with Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige. Prior to this recent hitch, Disney had expedited the film's release date from November 8 to May 3, 2024. This was conducted alongside a rearrangement of several other MCU titles in the face of an ongoing WGA strike.
The air of solidarity is expected to fill the early Friday morning as members of SAG-AFTRA take their stand on the picket line. Union President Fran Drescher is set to be among those fighting for their cause with Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, the guild's national executive director and chief negotiator, and other members of the guild's negotiating committee. The protest will traverse various Los Angeles locations from Netflix's offices, Paramount Studios, Warner Bros., to Disney from dawn to just before 1 PM.
With the strike coming to fruition, the solidarity extended to the star-studded premiere of Oppenheimer where big-screen paragons like Emily Blunt and Matt Damon made a hasty exit, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with their striking colleagues.

Well, it seems like the Blade-esque crossover of labor strikes and superhero films has begun in earnest. One could almost imagine Magneto hoisting a "Strike" sign as high as his demands (pardon the pun). Hollywood, it seems, is more susceptible to reality checks than we thought, with this bout of industrial action generating the kind of drama not seen since the final act of "Avengers: Endgame".
My spidey-senses tell me there's more to this than just industry politics. Of course, I'm referring to Reynolds' Instagram bombshell revealing Jackman's Wolverine, last seen teetering on the edge of dramatic defeat, ready for another chapter. Is there some miracle healing factor at work? And, speaking of phoenix-like returns, Garner's Elektra reentry into the Marvel universe can be spotted on the less wounded side of the healing spectrum.
Let's spend a moment on the script-writing powerhouse team, another Avengers of sorts, ready to tackle this threequel with a beast-like ferocity. To list them all counts as its own separate article, suffice to say we have some serious talent with proverbial pens in hand, or in this case, keyboards wired to brains.
However, the Sword of Damocles dangles over the production - our nemesis, the strike. It's as dramatic as a Thanos snap affecting not only the fate of Deadpool but multiple other titles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I guess that's a new definition for 'Infinity War'.
As I sign off, let's take our hats and masks off for Blunt and Damon and their grand show of unity. In the cinema of solidarity, we look forward to a return showing on the action-packed streets of Tinseltown and beyond.
