Divinity Scores SAG-AFTRA Nod; Dorff, Thorne, Bakula Await Debut

A. Prentice

Writer-director Eddie Alcazar's much-anticipated dystopian sci-fi thriller, "Divinity", has recently scored a SAG-AFTRA Interim Agreement. Set to star notable talents such as Stephen Dorff, Bella Thorne, and Scott Bakula, the negotiation will facilitate the cast in promoting the film's theatrical release. The black-and-white independent film will make its first appearance at the Regal Union Square in New York on October 13th, before moving to Los Angeles on October 20th. It will then make a more comprehensive debut on November 3.

"Divinity" tells an intriguing original story crafted by Alcazar himself, who also worked as the film's producer alongside Javier Lovato, Raphael Gindre, and Johnny Starke. The film premiered in the NEXT section of the Sundance Film Festival and set waves due to its gripping plot and the presence of Steven Soderbergh as the presentator and executive producer.

The storyline involves the life of scientist Sterling Pierce (portrayed by Bakula) in an unusual human existence. Pierce tries to unravel the secret to immortality, thus formulating a revolutionary serum ironically dubbed "Divinity". However, this reality holds a twisted turn as the once-benevolent dream production is now controlled by Pierce's son Jaxxon (Dorff). Society, as a result, has been disoriented by the mysterious drug whose origins continue to stay under covers.

Adding more sparks to the plot, two enigmatic brothers (Moises Arias and Jason Genao) enter the scene with a plan to kidnap the mogul. With the assistance of a seductive woman named Nikita (played by Karrueche Tran), they venture on the journey to achieve true immortality.

The project garnered interest from Dorff, who during Deadline's Sundance Studio engagement in January, shared his excitement about being part of something he thought would be "special". Thorne, who also stars in the film, was vocal about her enjoyment of working on an "unorthodox set" and spoke highly of her experience.

Switching gears, let’s indulge in a bit of witty repartee, shall we? It seems like immortality is quite the hot ticket in Hollywood these days. From "Altered Carbon" to "The Old Guard", and now "Divinity", it looks like 'forever' isn’t just overused in sappy love songs anymore. And let's not overlook our friend science, ever the wingman to fantastical plotlines, turning the implausible just plausible enough to keep us hooked.

Dorff’s declaration of it being something "special" isn't just exciting, it's telling. Seeing an actor of Dorff’s repute bewitched by a short film projection of Alcazar’s and then tracing that fascination into a full-on commitment to a feature film? Now that's a Hollywood story.

As to Bella Thorne's comments, who doesn't love an unorthodox set? Routine is a creativity killer, they say. And with dark matter of immortality, enigmatic brothers, and seductive alliances being tossed around, it’s highly unlikely that anyone associated with "Divinity" fell victim to the banal.

So, dust off those popcorn buckets, folks. Remember, it's not every day you get the chance to ponder on death, immortality, and rebirth while munching on buttery goodness. The fact you can do so from a Regal Cinema or the comfort of your respectable pajama-clad self at home - that's as close to Hollywood-style immortality as most of us might ever get to. Don’t miss out on the ride, it could be one for the ages. Or rather, for those seeking to escape them.
