Donald Glover's Lando Returns: From Disney+ Series to Big-Screen Star Wars Feature
Donald Glover, known for his infectious charisma as Lando Calrissian in Solo: A Star Wars Story, is set to be featured in a big screen Star Wars project. Initially reported to be a Disney+ series, Deadline confirms that the project is shifting gears and aiming for a theatrical release.
The news broke on Thursday, revealed by Stephen Glover, Donald's brother and fellow executive producer of Atlanta. Both Glovers had stepped in as writers for Lando in July, replacing Justin Simien.
On the Pablo Torre Finds Out podcast, Stephen, the three-time Atlanta Emmy nominee, shared the big update. "It's not even a show,” he said. “The idea right now is to do a movie... Right now because of the strike, it’s like [a game of] telephone."
Donald Glover's rendition of Lando Calrissian, Star Wars' deftly charming gambler, was first introduced in the 2018 movie Solo: A Star Wars Story. Despite the film's poor performance in the box office, Glover's Lando portrayal, a role originally brought to life by Billy Dee Williams in the early Star Wars sequels and reprised in 2019's The Rise of Skywalker, became a fan favorite.
The decision to return Donald Glover's Lando to the silver screen, disclosed in a Disney investor call in December 2020, comes on the heels of an announcement that Disney+ would reduce its output to allow more spacing between programs.
Now onto the frosting on this Star Wars cake.
Well, this news is as refreshing as an ice-cool glass of blue milk on Tatooine. Even though Glover's portrayal of Lando Calrissian in Solo didn't exactly make the Kessel Run in under twelve parsecs at the box office, the fan base adored him.
And, who could blame them? Glover captured the panache, charm, and astute resourcefulness of the galaxy's most notorious gambler, doing justice to Billy Dee Williams' original portrayal and then some.
Star Wars fans everywhere will surely light up their lightsabers in approval. Let's break out the Wookiee cookies and Corellian ale, because Lando is back, baby - but this time, he's not coming to the small screen; he's going big, as big as the Death Star itself.
As for the ambitious pivot from series to feature film, it's a bold move by the Disney lords reminiscent of a Leia Organa-level strategy. Are they playing a galactic game of Sabacc with fan expectations? Or simply putting their trust in the delivery of a positively electric Glover performance? Only time will tell, but I can sense the Force is strong with this one.
This gambit by Disney+ to scale down its production pipeline appears fascinating as they've decided to space out content, perhaps in a bid to emulate the time-honored Star Wars tradition of building galactic levels of anticipation. After all, good things come to those who wait in this galaxy and beyond. By marching to the beat of their own Star Wars fanfare, Disney proves they're as nimble and nimble-fingered as a squadron of Rogue One pilots.
In conclusion, may the 'Forces' of change work to everyone's advantage. The real winners here, it seems, are the masses of ardent Star Wars enthusiasts delaying their hyperspace jump in cheerful anticipation for the arrival of this Lando Calrissian feature. Indeed, "In a galaxy far, far away," rarely feels close enough.
