Esmail's Thriller "Leave the World Behind" to Open AFI Fest with Star-Studded Premiere
Acclaimed creator Sam Esmail's feature "Leave the World Behind" is set to kick off the 37th AFI Fest with its world premiere on October 25. Starring Academy Award winners Julia Roberts and Mahershala Ali, alongside four-time Oscar nominee Ethan Hawke and "Industry" star Myha'la, the apocalyptic thriller is slated to introduce the festival with a red carpet gala at the world-renowned TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood.
The narrative, developed by "Mr. Robot" and "Metropolis" series originator Esmail, is centred around the characters Amanda and Clay, played by Roberts and Hawke respectively. Both lead roles, along with their kids Archie (Charlie Evans) and Rose (Farrah Mackenzie), find their weekend rest in a luxurious rented house overturned by the unexpected arrival of two strangers. G.H. (Ali) and his daughter Ruth (Myha'la) turn up with ominous news of a cyberattack in progress and seek refuge in the house they allege to own. What follows is a grim confrontation between both families as a cataclysmic event looms, challenging each individual's place in a world on the brink of collapse.
The film, produced by Esmail Corp, Red Om Films, Higher Ground Productions, and Netflix Studios, also features acting veteran Kevin Bacon. President and CEO of AFI, Bob Gazzale expressed immense pride in presenting Esmail's new film. He lauded Esmail as a "commanding voice in the new generation of cinematic storytellers," and also highlighted the extra significance of the premiere considering that Esmail is an alumnus of the AFI Conservatory.
The AFI Fest, slated to run from October 25-29, will also showcase a diverse array of red carpet galas, special screenings, world cinema features, documentaries, and short films. The five-day event additionally serves as an Oscar qualifier.
Now, onto a few musings.
Esmail, with his penchant for suspense and astute storytelling to his credit, surely has us at the edge of our seats for "Leave the World Behind". The premise, comprising of captive scenario topped with a looming cataclysmic event, could serve as an excellent setup to scrutinize human relations when pushed to the brink.
And did I mention the star power? It's raining accolades with this cast bathed in Oscar shine. But isn't it refreshing to see heavyweights of the industry come together not for a biopic or a war epic, but an apocalyptic thriller?
Moreover, don't ignore the irony, folks. Coinciding with real-world cyber threats trending in our daily news, the cyberattack element of the plot could serve as a chilling complementary backdrop to the dramatic stakes on the screen. Let’s just hope reality doesn’t get too inspired.
All in all, it’s clear that AFI Fest is poised to begin on a heart-thumping note with "Leave the World Behind". It's an exciting time for modern filmmaking and an even more exciting time to be curled up in your popcorn-scented haven, waiting for the unfolding of what promises to be an enrapturing narrative. Yes, we have a lot to look forward to. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to mark my calendar.
