Fennell's "Saltburn" to Open London Film Festival

A. Prentice

Emerald Fennell’s forthcoming picture, “Saltburn”, is slated to open this year’s edition of the London Film Festival (LFF). Fennell, the esteemed filmmaker behind "Promising Young Woman", penned and produced this latest cinematic offering. With its International Premiere arranged for October 4 at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall, the screening will be mirrored by simultaneous viewings across the UK.

"Saltburn", a riveting collaboration between Amazon Studios, MGM, MRC, and LuckyChap Entertainment, is also co-produced by celebrated figures Margot Robbie and Josey McNamara. It's set to debut in cinemas on November 24.

Promising an all-star cast featuring Barry Keoghan, Jacob Elordi, Rosamund Pike, Richard E. Grant, Alison Oliver, Archie Madekwe, and Carey Mulligan, "Saltburn" is already creating anticipation for its “beautifully wicked tale of privilege and desire." The plot unravels amidst early-2000s UK, with student Oliver Quick, played by Barry Keoghan, navigating his way through Oxford University, only to be lured into a mysterious world by the enticing Felix Catton, portrayed by Jacob Elordi. An unforgettable summer ensues when Quick is invited to Saltburn, Catton's family’s vast estate.

Fennell expressed her delight at the film opening the widely esteemed BFI London Film Festival, saying it was an event she “followed excitedly" during her formative years. The film's premiere at the BFI marks a special homecoming of sorts given the film's British narrative roots.

This year brings a fresh start for the LFF, with Kristy Matheson stepping in as the festival head after the departure of Tricia Tuttle last year. Matheson lauded Saltburn as possessing great potential, highlighting its "exceptional performances, delicious plot twists, and a soundtrack of early 21st-century pop bangers".

While the International Premiere has been confirmed, the location for the film's global debut this fall remains undisclosed. There are whispers that "Saltburn" may grace the Telluride Film Festival. Additionally, a first-look image has been released for public perusal.

Now, isn't that a delectable platter of promising cinematic goodness?

Emerald Fennell, our home-grown Oscar winner, serves up yet another tantalising film fest opener. This quintessentially British narrative blends charm, privilege, desire, a silver spoon of eccentricity, and apparently, a side dish of "early 21st-century pop bangers". And who could ignore a character called Felix Catton? That's practically aristocracy purring with intrigue.

Once again, the London Film Festival promises to be an event to watch, literally and metaphorically. Bridging old and new with Matheson stepping in as festival head, the platform is set for a fresh infusion of creativity.

Though the whereabouts of the global premiere is still shrouded in mystery, does it even matter? With Fennell at the helm and a stamp of approval from LFF, wherever it debuts, we’re already sold on the promise of a thrilling ride. In the words of the inimitable Hollywood legends, "That's a wrap, folks!" See you at the premiere.
