A few years ago, people were talking about how the animation would die out due to technology not advancing fast enough. With every new generation of computer chips that has hit the market, animators have more powerful tools at their disposal to create content. Now, even though it took longer than expected for computers to catch up with our imagination, we are living in an era where anything is possible!
We live in an age where anyone can make animated films or videos without having to go through expensive educational routes or hire professional help. Technology has made creating animations accessible to almost everyone!
Many think this access is what caused the rise and fall of the cartoon genre over the past decade. Before very advanced software was available, only top university students could work on truly sophisticated graphics. But now anyone can produce quality cartoons using free, beginner-friendly software.
There are many different types of media that use animation as a storytelling tool, so learning how to do it yourself is an excellent way to experiment. It’s like taking art classes in your own style!
This article will talk you through some basic ways to learn animation by doing it yourself. There are several apps and software that contain lots of layers and sheets which you can mix and match to make your movie.
Who is Lassie?
Many people know Lassie as one of the most famous dog breeds in film and television, but few realize that this breed has some pretty cool origins!
In fact, before there was Rover, Lassie did not exist at all! The name “Lassie” comes from her registered trademarked name Alfredo Lavagnino Jr., who owned two dogs named Sadie and Lad. While walking his dogs in Northern Italy in 1917, Mr. Lavagnino spied what he thought to be a lost sheep outside a farm gate. He called out to it, asking if it needed help finding its way home. To his surprise, the animal responded back with bark instead of silence or another kind word - it gave him a challenge by jumping into the fence after it!
Mr. Lavagnino then took off running towards the gates, thinking only about getting away from the dog. But when he turned around, he saw something even more surprising…the dog was chasing an actual live sheep through the countryside! It didn't stop until it had caught the woolly creature and picked it up!
At first, Mr. Lavagnino couldn't believe his eyes, so he returned to his house and got his camera to take pictures. When he reviewed these photos later, he noticed something strange - both animals were looking directly at each other! And then, the second unexpected thing happened...
Who is Woody?
Many people consider Woody, or “Woody” as he is sometimes referred to, to be one of the greatest movie characters ever written. He was first portrayed in an animated film by actor Chris Wood in 1991’s Toy Story. Since then, his character has grown into a lovable comedy staple that many have come to love.
While some may think that he was just designed to be like every other kid out there, what makes him special is how self-aware he is. He consistently references classic films and stories such as The Lion King and Daffodil Day.
He also seems to embody the traits of most stereotypical boys at this age; he loves toys and wants more things, and he enjoys action movies. What sets him apart from others is his desire to do good even when no one is telling him to.
At times, it feels like he knows what everyone else is thinking, which is why he is often used as a source of comic relief.
Who is Steven Spielberg?
The legendary filmmaker has gone through many stages in his career, but there’s one constant that hasn’t changed - he loves stories! It doesn’t matter if they're big or small, fiction is hard to resist for anyone with an active imagination.
Spielberg made his name as a director of feature-length films (he also directed TV episodes), so it's not surprising to find out that most of his movies contain at least some kind of narrative element. He even won an Academy Award for Best Director for A Bridge Too Far, which is mostly set during a non-narrative segment.
But before we get into all of the other ways that storytelling plays a major role in his work, let us take a look at what makes him special.

As we discussed in our article about film genres, there are three major categories: stories that focus almost exclusively on action, narratives that emphasize characters over setting and events, and movies with no narrative structure at all.
Animation and live-action films fit into the second category because they’re typically characterized by strong storytelling structures made up of character development, event progression, and narrative flow.
They also both use dramatic tension to motivate scenes and storylines, so naturally, they relate to the first genre type.
But aside from this similarity, one key thing sets animation apart from other mediums - it is totally self-contained.
You read that right! An animated movie does not require you to have an understanding of how filmmaking works or what makes a story work. You don’t need to know anything about cinematography, editing, acting, or even mathematics to appreciate The Lion King!
That said, there are some things you should be aware of if you want to enjoy most animations. Just like any form of media, there are different styles and techniques used for creating them, and some take more skill than others.
In this article, we will discuss two such tools: animatics and voice acting. By now you may have heard these terms, but let’s go in-depth as to why they matter and where to find them.
Who is Akira Kurosawa?
The most famous name in anime is undoubtedly that of Japan’s greatest filmmaker, Akira Kurosawa. He directed some of your favorite movies such as Ran (1985), Kaguyak (The Stray Dog) (1949), Dodeskaden (Thirteen Assassins) (1960), Ikiru (1963), and Dreams (1989).
He also made what many consider to be two of the best live-action films ever made; they are The Seven Samurai (1954) and The Hidden Blade (1957). Both of these films have been adapted into pretty successful animes themselves!
Kurosawa was born May 26th 1893 in Izu-ku, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. At a very young age, he showed artistic talent by drawing pictures and designing logos. By elementary school, he had mastered painting and calligraphy.
It was not until his second year of high school that he decided to try something new. One day he took out a camera he bought earlier and started filming himself. His classmates were surprised to see him do this but soon became interested.
After graduation, he entered Meiji University where he majored in literature before switching to film. It was here that he would begin developing his skills as a director.
In 1925 he made his first short movie which focused on three different stories all taking place at one location.
Who is James Cameron?
Born in New York City, California, United States, James Kent Cameron was raised in La Canada, California. He has two brothers and one sister. His father was an accountant and his mother worked as a nurse before having children.
James grew up watching lots of movies, mostly action films. As he got older, he became more interested in science fiction and fantasy stories. These influenced him to pursue creative writing as well as filmmaking.
He graduated high school with honors and went on to attend both UCLA and USC, but dropped out twice! He then transferred to San Jose State University where he received his Bachelor’s Degree in Communication Arts and Sciences in 1988.
His first job after college was working for Disney Studios as a writer. It wasn’t long until he moved on to Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), a special effects company that produces incredible videos you have probably seen a lot of them.
While at ILM, he wrote and directed several short animated videos which were very popular and won many awards. This really helped establish his career since people began recognizing his talent!
In 1992, he left ILM to make what would become his most famous movie; The Terminator. Since then, it has been awarded numerous Oscars including Best Picture, Director, Screenplay, and Editing.
Who is Peter Jackson?
As we discussed earlier, the film can really boil down to stories. And there are many types of stories you can tell in the cinema. Some are longer than others, but all have a plot or sequence of events that move the story forward.
A movie with a continuous running storyline is called a feature. A series of individual scenes connected by a narrative arc is what makes up an episode, or segment, of a television show.
Films typically begin with a short introductory scene introducing characters and setting the stage for the rest of the movie. This is how most people learn about the character’s backstory and why they want what they want out of the movie.
Intermediate scenes come next, which are necessary to advance the plot. These usually involve actions, conversations, or both. Finally, the conclusion scenes bring the movie to a close, sometimes leaving you feeling emotionally attached to the characters.
This article will discuss one director’s love for these three components of storytelling. His special talent is creating engaging features that contain at least two of them! Let’s take a look at his unique style as we explore his favorite type of movie.
Who is Steven Seagal?
Born in California, he grew up with military parents and lived in various countries as a child. At the age of 10, he moved back to America to settle down. He attended college for two years before dropping out to pursue his dreams full-time.
Since then, he has starred in more than twenty films. Many of these have been action or thriller movies that feature martial arts. His biggest success comes from incorporating some sort of “hardware” into the movie - you can tell it was him because there are many shots where his face is shown.
He is well known for being in very popular movies so most people have seen at least one of his films. Many consider him to be an actor who makes entertaining movies. Others believe he is talented and versatile enough to do anything.
