Gal Gadot Turns Cold as Stone in Netflix's Spy Flick Frenzy
Netflix is rapidly setting the pace for big, star-studded action movie franchises as it continues to amass a robust line-up of Hollywood-style on-screen entertainment. Action-packed sequels such as Extraction, Hollywood smash hits like the Russo Brothers' The Gray Man, and big-budget productions like Red Notice are all part of the streaming service's grand strategy. Yet, the latest addition to Netflix's repertoire takes a stirringly unique path. Heart of Stone, a complex spy thriller teeming with James Bond-esque action sequences, positions star Gal Gadot square in the spotlight.
Initiating the trend set by Netflix’s The Old Guard, Heart of Stone is a vehicle for Gadot, relegating male roles, including Jamie Dornan’s complex anti-hero, largely to the background. In a departure from traditional blockbuster format, the men are passengers in a vehicle firmly driven by Gadot's character.
From the opening scene, it is evident that Heart of Stone has found its niche in the thrilling realm of spy dramas. The film commences with a twenty-minute action sequence framed by the grandeur of a luxurious Italian ski resort, Glacier Hotel Grawand - the highest point in Europe. Here, MI6 tech expert, Rachel Stone, played by Gadot, demonstrates her prowess with an adrenaline-infused and visually breathtaking chase on the icy mountainside, modelled on the unforgettable climactic scenes of countless 007 instalments.
However, the true depths of the plot begin to unravel soon after this gripping introduction. Stone is part of a specialist team working with lead agent Parker, played by Dornan, and associates Bailey and Yang, who are grappling with the threat of an ambitious hacker, Keya Dhawan, played by Indian superstar Alia Bhatt. The narrative gains complexity as Stone's true affiliations are unveiled; she is a central figure in The Charter, a secretive and cutting-edge organisation frequently tapped for missions beyond MI6's capabilities.
As the plot unfolds, the characters grapple with the monumental task of securing an AI device named 'The Heart', a tool possessing the power to annihilate the world if cornered by evil forces. Stirring complications arise when Dornan's character uncovers a personal agenda, layering fresh intrigue and suspense into the plot.
Director Tom Harper, known for his Amazon period adventure film, The Aeronauts, has once again proven his ability to helm a global thriller of this magnitude. One can notice the film’s sweeping geographical transitions, from the towering Italian peaks, across Portugal, the UK, Iceland, and the desert outskirts of Morocco.
In every sense, Heart of Stone is a colossal offering. Coupled with the lending star-power of Gadot and Dornan, along with a skilfully assembled international cast, the film pushes the boundaries of conventional streaming-content narratives.
However, with a pinch of wit and a splash of impartial analysis, it's time for a critique. Heart of Stone delivers the palpable sensation of a high-octane blockbuster, albeit within the confines of Netflix's streaming platform. Despite its lustrous cinematic allure, one might wonder if this fast-paced, action-heavy and visually appealing film loses a portion of its grandeur on the small screen. It's tailor-made for the rumble of an IMAX theater - perhaps a noisy popcorn-muncher away from you - rather than the comfortable silence of your living room.
Imagine watching Stone's hair-raising skydive amidst an exploding structure on your laptop instead of a thirty-foot screen; granted, it would still induce gasps, but are these gasps accompanied by the full, heavyweight punch of awe it would deliver in a theater? I doubt it.
Nevertheless, don’t let the small screen underplay Gadot's magnetic pull here. Her commanding performance carries a compelling humanity that elevates the material. The direction and casting add to this movie-marinated-in-thriller-spice, creating a perfect blend for a late-summer wind-down in the cinema of your couch.
Heart of Stone starts streaming on Netflix from August 11th, 2023. And given Gadot's pull and the promise of unrevealed star-studded cameos, it wouldn't hurt to save the date. Hollywood, for now, is gracing your households with an equally superhuman touch. The outcome, without a doubt, would be something to watch out for.
