Greta Gerwig Eyes Narnia, Bond Franchise Next on Directing Radar

A. Prentice

Greta Gerwig, the acclaimed director known for her distinct narrative and visual style, recently expressed her intention to create an array of films based on The Chronicles of Narnia books by C.S. Lewis. During her appearance on the Total Film podcast, Gerwig acknowledged that the thought of undertaking this project is somewhat intimidating. The quote "I'm properly scared of it," serves as proof of her mixed feelings. However, she did not allow her fear to overshadow her excitement, stating that being terrified of a project is a good starting point for her.

Apparently, it's not just Narnia that is on Gerwig's directing radar. She ambitiously suggested that she aims to helm a diverse selection of films throughout her career, wanting to tackle "big things and small things and everywhere in between." Not even the power-packed James Bond franchise is too far a stretch. Although currently deflecting the idea, Gerwig indicated a possible interesting twist by saying, "you never know."

It seems Gerwig isn't the only director with ambitions, attracting the attention of the Bond franchise; Christopher Nolan is also in the mix. The filmmaker, in a recent appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, alluded that directing a Bond movie would be an "amazing privilege," albeit constrained by the reputation and expectations of such an esteemed character.

Concrete plans of Gerwig helming a Narnia film surfaced during a New Yorker profile feature. This falls in line with early speculation following Netflix's multi-year deal to secure the rights to the Narnia books back in 2018. The Chronicles of Narnia, which have previously been adapted into a successful trilogy by Disney and Fox, depict a magical realm known as Narnia, uncovered by siblings during World War II.

Currently, Gerwig is creating a buzz with her latest project, Barbie. The Warner Bros film, which features Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as the iconic couple, Barbie and Ken, marks the best preview box office of the year to date, raking in $22.3 million.

Now onto the fun part - the astute observations and light humor. Firstly, it seems as though Greta Gerwig has painted a target on every great literary and cinematic franchise of the past and future. From something as fluffy as Barbie to something as fantastical as Narnia, Gerwig proves to have a versatile appetite for storytelling. One can only imagine what cinematic mashup she might spin next - perhaps "Goldilocks meets Terminator"?

However, what's commendable is her fearlessness or rather, her healthy regard for fear. It seems to be a fuel for Gerwig, propelling her to explore varying depths in films and challenging her own creative limits. Though not every one of us would jump at the prospect of adding some waking lions to our work life, she seems more than up for it.

Lastly, amidst the Narnia talks and Barbie land, there's the fleeting prospect of Gerwig directing a James Bond installment. Now, having James Bond with Gerwig's brand of storytelling could be an unprecedented cinematic treat.

In sum, Greta Gerwig's bravura and ambition to handle a variety of projects, regardless of genre, size, or anticipation, indicates a promising narrative landscape for Hollywood. We can't help but wait to see how she takes us deep into Narnia, maybe swinging a cameo from Bond on the way? If you're listening, Ms.Gerwig, remember, the name's Prentice...Addison Prentice.
