How Animated Movies Work

Addison Smith

What is animation? An animated movie or series is filmed as normal, but some of the scenes are not still, they go quickly through many different motions and shapes. These sequences are called animations!

The animation was once thought to be only for children’s movies due to its cost, but technology has advanced so much that it is now possible to create very rich stories using this technique.

Many people refer to films like The Lion King, Finding Nemo, Tangled, Monsters Inc., Cars, Despicable Me, and Frozen as examples of animé. This article will talk about how these films use animation to tell their story and how you can learn from those secrets.

There are three major types of animation:

Traditional 2D Animation 3D Animation Clay-based Animation

Each type uses different techniques to achieve what we call the effect of animation. Let’s take a closer look at them by studying some examples.

2D Animation

A classic example of 2d animation is watching a movie. There are no special effects in this style apart from the way the characters move naturally.

The filmmakers filming the actors directly into a camera creates an illusion of movement because your mind fills in the gaps between each frame. Technically speaking, every frame is just one snapshot of time where the filmmaker decides when to capture the scene.

So let’s talk about how movies are made, or more specifically, how animated films are made. The term “animated movie” is pretty general, so what we will really be talking about here is just how animation is integrated into filmmaking.

When an actor says their line, they are recorded multiple times - with some variations. Each variation is called a take. Movie directors have a standard number of takes for each scene, but sometimes things don’t go as planned and there aren’t enough takes to get the perfect performance.

That’s where animators come in! They create new versions of the scenes using computer graphics (or CGI). These added touches are referred to as effects, and most people associate them with flashy videos that say something like : “I am enhancing your life” or “Win a free pizza!”

Effects can also include adding monsters to a story or creating environments that do not exist in real life. This is because it is easier to make pictures look realistic than it is to write a script that makes someone laugh or cry.

There are several types of effects used in film making, and many artists develop specialties within those areas. A very common effect in animations is changing the color of an object or person. For example, if you see a dog eating food, you may notice that its mouth is slightly pink from all of the flavor.
