How Are Animated Films Made?

Addison Smith

Many people enjoy watching animated films, whether they are completely new to the medium or have their own collection. There are several routes that an animator takes in order to bring their film into existence. Some artists start with a fully-drawn cartoon first before adding in some of the other elements such as characters and environments.

Others begin with a designed environment or character and then add in all of the things like hair and clothes that make up the finished product.

And then there are those who create both the drawn element and the interactive element in one go!

All of these different styles can be practiced by anyone, it is just dependent upon what level you are at currently and how much time you have to devote to creating your project.

There are many great opportunities for beginning animators to hone their craft, from YouTube to college courses. By studying the methods of others, you will be able to pick up tricks and tips for developing your style or giving yourself a leg up on the competition.

Visual effects

A significant part of an animated feature film is its visual effects (VFX). These are designed, produced, and incorporated into the movie to add special qualities or new imagery. They can be very elaborate and expensive, but they’re also quite creative!

Many VFX artists develop tricks and techniques that others later adapt for use in other films. For example, people sometimes say that it was something invented by the artist who worked on a given effect - though most agree that it was actually first done years earlier in a different medium.

In general, VFX consist of adding things to eliminate or reduce elements of the filmed scene. This could be taking away pieces of furniture, creating new objects, replacing existing ones, or even completely redesigning the setting or environment.

It's important to note that not every studio has a VFX team, so some parts of an animation project may go unfinished because there isn't anyone available to do them.

Paint and media

For any artist, creating anything is always a process that requires you to invest time in research, theory, and practice. It’s not enough just to make things because you can easily look up how to do it!

In the case of animated films, there are several artists who work together to create one finished product. Each individual contributor gets their own area or space where they can create.

Some areas may be more formal like drawing, while others may be more creative such as character design. No matter what area an artist works in, they must collaborate with other artists in the studio on their level.

This collaboration comes in many forms

It can be talking about ideas for scenes, characters, or settings

It can be telling each other what materials they should use

It can be asking questions about techniques and tools

It can be having informal conversations

The best way to achieve this teamwork is through communication. Make sure your colleagues know you and talk to you about things so that they feel comfortable sharing information with you.

Set design

Setting up a scene for an animated movie is very different than doing it live action. For one, you are not confined to natural light or indoor settings like filming a documentary or feature. You can also go heavier with using lights if needed since there aren’t any real-life constraints like a sun setting outside or shadows coming from other sources.

There are many ways to achieve this effect in CG films so anything is possible! The hardest part will be deciding which direction to take the characters and what props they should have.

Overall, I think people underestimate how much time goes into designing a set for animation. It takes a lot of thinking about where things could go and what angles there could be. Figuring out the overall mood and feel of the space is important as well.

At least half of all the artists working on an anime film work at least some part of their career on it. This includes concept artist, character designer, background painter, and others. Not only does everyone bring something unique to the project, but they usually spend lots of time together as a team.

Voice acting

Another integral part of animated films is voice acting. This includes characters speaking, as well as voices for other things such as music or sound effects. Companies recruit professional voice actors to create new lines for your movie!

Professional voice talent must be hired to play these parts, so it is important to know what qualities are needed to find someone who can do this.

It is also important to check references and if they are able to work in an animation studio setting.

As you probably have noticed, not every film has lots of special effects or flashy visuals. That does not mean that they cannot add value by giving their voice more weight than normal. If possible, try to listen to a few minutes of a character’s voice before accepting employment.
