How Are Movie Scripts Written

Addison Smith

A movie is an extended story that involves many different characters. These stories are usually very long, sometimes even running for hours to days! As writers of film scripts, we as aspiring screenwriters have a lot to do beyond writing our scenes.

We also need to write what’s known as a “script log” or “story arc” which is a series of events that occur within the script. The scriptwriter must connect these events into a coherent whole.

In this article, you will learn some easy ways to start creating your first script log. Begin by picking an event, any event! Then, brainstorm potential plot points related to it until you run out of ideas. Finally, organize your thoughts into sequential order and create your first script arc.

Find an expert in screenwriting

Now that you have your script done, it is time to find yourself a professional writer who can help you shape your screenplay!

Screenwriters are writers who specialize in writing scripts for the movie industry. They are not involved with the filming or marketing of the final product, but they do play an integral part in creating a story by adding additional content and shaping the narrative.

This includes things like incorporating themes, developing characters, and giving the storyline proper structure. All of these contribute heavily to making the film work and get recognized.

There are many ways to become a freelance writer, including through blogging sites, journalism, and publishing. Blogging is one of the best ways to start because you can write about anything, and anyone will accept your material if you use your talent to showcase quality written products.

Blogging sites offer money programs that pay-per-view article posts which makes it more lucrative than just starting as a journalist where you must purchase expensive media credentials. There are several good websites to look into to see what kind of rewards they offer and how much money this career can earn you.

(As mentioned before, writing for others is another way to make extra income as a freelancer.

Outline the story in a table format

Writing a script is not as easy as some might think! It’s not like writing an article or book, where you can simply take a topic and elaborate upon it.

Writing a movie script is more complicated than that!

It takes much longer to write a screenplay than it does to write a regular article or novel. This is because there are so many components involved in creating a film. These components include:

The setting

Characters

Storylines

Sequences (or scenes)

Style and tone

Timeline

All of these things must be organized into one cohesive piece before you can start writing.

So how do all of these parts get put together? By using what we call the movie-making process. The movie-making process was first used back in 1935 during the filming of Walt Disney’s classic feature film, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Since then, this system has become well-established and is now considered the standard way to make feature-length films.

With the help of professionals, the movie-making process can be broken down even further into several smaller stages, which have special names such as the development stage, production stage, and editing stage. But for this lesson, we will focus only on the two most important stages: the scripting stage and the rewriting stage.

Write the script

Writing a screenplay is not a simple task, especially if you are having trouble making progress with your script. Several steps must be done to write a movie!

The first step in writing a film is to WRITE THE SCRIPT. Starting at page one and drafting continuously will make sure the story gets told.

After this, the next thing to do is determine YOUR PLATFORM. This is deciding what kind of cinema you want to watch the movie and who would enjoy it. Is it for action audiences? Or maybe romantic ones?

Then, find out where YOU WANT TO GO as a filmmaker! What genre do you wish to experiment with or have success in? All three of these things can influence how you structure the script and play around with storylines.

And lastly, decide ON WHAT FRAME THIS STORY WILL BE SET IN.

Edit your script

A movie is not finished until it has been approved by both its director and producer, as well as its writer. This process of editing happens many times after the initial writing stage.

Screenwriters go through several rounds of rewrites and edits before their work gets accepted into production. The screenwriting team will usually make suggestions to improve the story, characters, or dialogue.

These revisions are important, not only because they help polish the written material, but also because they have a major impact on the final product.

The writers’ parts in the filmmaking process often go something like this: idea -> outline-> draft -> comments -> rewrite -> finalize and submit.

And that’s just for the first round! There can be multiple rounds depending on what needs to be fixed and when someone feels the current version is good enough.

But however hard you think you write, there is no way you could ever anticipate all the ways a filmmaker could use your ideas. So don’t get upset if you feel your original concept got lost in translation.

Submit your script to studios

After you have written your screenplay, it is time to find an audience for it! While some may suggest self-publishing as the best option, this isn’t always possible unless you already have a large social media presence or are willing to spend lots of money on advertising and marketing strategies.

The hardest part about publishing a screenplay is getting someone to read it. A lot of people start writing a book because they want to get into writing, but then don’t quite know what to do with their story so they never actually publish anything. Or they write their whole manuscript, but then nothing more than a few pages in and give up.

Submitting your work to film companies can be very expensive, which is why most writers don’t unless they are rich. There are many ways to submit your work though, and most offer free samples of theirs that you can review and determine if these are worth paying to see your movie made.

Connect with an agent

A movie is not made alone! That is, of course, unless you are Steven Spielberg or Robert Zemeckis - but even they have writers to work with them. The scriptwriter will write all of the dialogue in the film as well as contribute to the overall story.

Most feature films use a draft process. This means that the writing team will re-write parts of the screenplay several times before it is considered final. It can take anywhere from months to years depending on how much rewriting is needed after initial drafts.

The director will usually give their approval before the script goes into production, which is why having a working relationship with a professional screenwriter is so important.

There are many ways to connect with a screenwriting career. You do not need to be professionally trained to write a movie! All anyone needs to start writing fiction is a notebook and an intention to create stories.

Become an assistant director

As mentioned earlier, writers are usually not involved in the production process until the later stages of film-making. That is unless they have the script that they are trying to get produced!

Filmmakers will often need help directing scenes or ensuring certain aspects of filming occur correctly. This is where having a background in filmmaking comes in handy.

As such, most large studios offer courses for different positions within the industry. These can include courses for setting up shots, editing, cinematography, sound recording and producing.

By taking these courses you would be developing your skills as a filmmaker and this could open up many opportunities for you. Many filmmakers start as assistants before moving on to other positions.

General courses like those I talked about above give you an understanding of all areas of the movie business, which is great if you want to move up the ladder. However, being able to work as an Assistant Director (AD) means more than just knowing how to do things well!

You would also need to know how to write effective scripts so that people can contribute towards the finished product.

Writing movie scripts is a lot of work! There are so many different ways to get into writing for film, from doing screenwriting as a profession to scripting movies you have already watched and adapted well.

One way to learn how to write a script is by editing existing ones. You can do this by either taking an informal look at them or buying a very cheap copy and then improving it yourself.

The first thing to do when looking at a completed screenplay is to identify what makes it special. What elements does it contain that other similar films don’t? Is there anything particularly strong about its plot, characters, or setting?

Once you have determined these things, you can compare those parts with your creativity and ideas. You could even take some inspiration from the original script and see where you can fit in his or her style.

Movie studios will sometimes hire writers who have done something similarly related before, so they have set templates and rules people use. Figuring out which bits of theirs were successful may help you become more creative and adaptable in yours.
