How Cinematic Mode Works

When you use the front facing camera for recording, there is an option to turn on cinematic mode. This feature allows your phone to create some of the needed extra space by using a second screen as a back drop.

By having this additional background, the quality of the video looks smoother than one with no backdrop. This effect depends heavily on the quality of the filming device so make sure to look up how to use that before editing!

There are two main reasons why most people turn this feature on. The first is because it seems more professional looking and the second is due to possible limitations in filming spaces.

Another feature that has become increasingly popular is cinematic mode, or as some call it, V-sync disabled. This allows your computer to handle rendering faster than with normal settings, which require locking down the timing of when pixels can be displayed.

When enabled in gaming modes, this helps prevent screen tearing, where part of a frame is drawn slightly ahead of time. When you move the camera closer for more depth perception, there’s not enough time left before the next frame to draw everything properly, so parts are just skipped and blurry.

This is called temporal aliasing, and it’s very annoying when watching a movie! It's similar to how moving across a room quickly makes things look blurred, but longer. In games, though, people use it mostly to suffer through until the framerate stabilizes.

When your device has limited screen space, something that can be difficult to deal with is movement or judder caused when there’s not enough room for the video to fill up all of the pixels.

When this happens, you may notice some blurred lines and broken shapes in the graphics and/or text. This effect will get worse as the content gets longer and more detailed: the harder it is for your browser to show everything completely, the more likely there will be visible glitches.

This is called ‘motion blur’ or ‘judder’. It’s usually worse at times when the computer needs to quickly process lots of data, which is exactly what happens when you open an unfamiliar directory or file type.

Fortunately, most web browsers have a tool that can help prevent this. Introduced back in the early days of mobile devices, cinematic mode works by limiting the number of shades each color can be divided into.

By lowering the quality of the image slightly, computers are given extra time to work through all of the colors, avoiding blurry edges. While this may mean the picture looks a little bit sharper than normal, it also removes the smooth flowy look that makes videos feel so good on large screens like TVs and laptops.

To use this feature, simply go to Settings > Advanced > Motion Blur and then pick On (cinema mode) from the drop-down menu.

Mostly due to the nature of how camera lenses work, when a panning shot is done, the viewer naturally assume that what they see is parallel to the ground. This is not always the case though, sometimes it can seem like nothing but a circle.

This is because as the lens moves farther away from the object, it takes longer for it to focus (or get close). During this time, the image becomes blurry and does not come into full focus until the whole setup is at a closer distance.

This effect is called panned out blur, and it is very common tool in cinematography. By using this method during filming, the depth perception feels more natural, which helps make the movie feel better.

There are two main reasons why this happens. First, professional cameras have motors inside that control the movement of the lens. These motors help keep steady footage, which is another way to achieve this look.

The second reason has to do with mathematics. As mentioned before, the longer the lens needs to focus, the wider its range of blurs. A wide-angle lens will have a much larger area of soft focus than a standard lens.

When zooming in towards someone or something, make sure there aren’t any holes or lines where the camera could go. You don’t want anything getting cut off so always keep that area free.
