Over the past century, media has played an integral part in our lives as individuals. It is something we use to connect with each other, learn about ourselves, fulfill idle entertainment needs, and strengthen community ties.
Hollywood is one of the most influential forms of media that exists today. Since its inception, it has trained us to look at film as a way to achieve personal growth and enjoy storytelling.
Many people are familiar with the term “storytelling” but what does that really mean? The word itself suggests someone else’s story - something external that shapes you.
As humans, we relate to others who tell similar stories more than ones that are different. A good narrative follows a pattern called a plot, which everyone knows when they read or watch a movie.
The storyline typically features events that build up towards a climax and then a resolution. This pattern applies to novels, movies, and real life instances where things change, evolve, and come to a conclusion.
A classic example of this is the movie Avatar. During the early stages of production, it was unknown if audiences would accept the premise and concept of the movie.
But now, almost ten years later, there are multiple versions of the movie that emphasize the theme and underlying message. Many say it changed how they perceive nature and the universe!
For this article, we will be talking mostly about action films, specifically those containing large amounts of gun fire.
The birth of the movie theater
For most people, going to the movies is a special occasion. It requires you to go out, spend some money, and watch a film!
Many things have changed about the way we enjoy watching films, but one thing has remained constant - the movie theatre.
The movie theatre was invented in Paris back in 1808 by two men who wanted to give their fellow citizens a chance to socialize after work. Since they needed somewhere to show a film, they connected up two projectors and made an indoor space where you could sit and watch a movie.
It did not take long before every city had its own movie theatre. In fact, there are over 70,000 screens around the world that play movies!
But why do we keep coming back to see a new movie in the same place time and time again?
It’s because the movie theatre feels like home.
You get all your friends together so you can chat while you watch a movie, and it is always clean and well-maintained.
There is nothing quite like sitting down to watch a good story with lots of action or comedy depending on how hungry you are for either at that moment.
The growth of the movie industry
When someone says they love movies, there are two main branches to explore as to how they enjoy watching them. People who watch action-packed films or blockbuster movies that feature lots of special effects, explosions and loud noises, usually referred to as action movies, and people who like more intimate stories with strong characters, typically called dramatic movies.
But before we get into describing what the movie industry is today, let us take a look back at when it started!
The movie industry was not around for very long. It did not start being made and distributed until the late 19th century in America, and even then, it took some time to find its feet.
It was not until the 1920s that the movie industry really picked up steam though, making this period one of intense activity.
During this time, many different styles of filmmaking were experimented with, leading to the current format of the movie you see today. Some of these experimental filming techniques included use of panning shots, closeup angles and slow zooms. All of these contribute to the style of the film, and all have their own unique appeal.

Good storytelling is what defines a good movie. A story is anything mentioned events, situations, conversations or storylines. A narrative is something that follows a sequence of events, and stories often focus on character development.

Movie theaters come under fire
Over the past few years, movie theater owners have been facing significant criticism. Some say that they are too expensive or that it is impossible to enjoy a show without snacks or drinks. These sellers also claim that modern technology makes going to the movies overly complicated.
Some believe that the movie watching experience has become less important than it once was. Many people feel that you can simply watch a movie at home using your smartphone as proof of this theory!
Movie theaters seem to be fading away quickly. This has many fans upset because they love experiencing a good movie in a comfortable setting. Fortunately for those who love film, there are other ways to enjoy them!

The beginning of movie ratings
In 1841, five years after Thomas Edison invented the light bulb, William Selby negotiated his way into an appointment with President Lincoln at the White House. While talking about lighting technology, he mentioned that people often have strong reactions to bright lights, especially when they are used for too long or in inappropriate conditions.
He suggested giving this phenomenon a name so that professionals could be aware of it. So, the president gave him $250 and asked him to come up with a standard terminology for this effect. Selby came back two days later with the word “caution” and made no effort to profit from the money he received.
Since then, warning labels have become very common in our society. It is now commonplace to find them on things like food, medicines, and electronics. They help protect individuals who handle these products responsibly by letting them know what risks may occur if they use them improperly.
In fact, their prevalence has become such a normal part of life that we sometimes forget how revolutionary they were originally. Before 1950 only three movies got higher than a grade D (restricted viewing). After that, there was a small boom as more and more films received limited releases due to fears of audience reaction.
Nowadays, however, almost every film receives wide exposure because most people feel that movie going is an integral part of being a healthy citizen. People learn something new, enjoy the stories, and form opinions based on what they see and hear.
The founding of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences
In May 1909, just two years after his first motion picture was shown in Los Angeles, movie mogul Carl Laemmle organized an event he called the First Annual Conference of Historical Re-enactors.
At this conference, which took place at Madison Square Garden in New York City, participants gathered to celebrate what would become one of Hollywood’s most enduring institutions: the annual Oscars ceremony.
The Oscar is both an accolade and a prize - it's like winning the Nobel Prize for filmmaking.
Since its creation in 1929, the Academy has bestowed more than 1,000 awards on films that are considered some of the greatest ever made. More than 2 billion people have watched the Oscars broadcast since it began running weekly television shows in 1949.
While the Oscars were originally designed as a way to honour artistic excellence in cinema, they now also exist as a marketing tool for the film industry. Since the early days when winners could expect to be greeted with boozy celebration, the gongs have sometimes been used to reward or promote specific movies and filmmakers.
Oscar nominations
Before there were Oscars, there was The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. In 1929, when it first awarded Best Actress for Gone With the Wind, there were only twenty members. Now there are over 6,000!
The Academy began as an organization that rewards excellence in film making with its top prize: An award called the “Oscar”. Each year, the Academy selects a set number of films (usually around twenty) to be considered for this honor.
Each movie gets two votes per member, one from each voter who is able to choose whether to give the award to just the director or both the director and screenwriter. This is how it has been since the very beginning.
Since most filmmakers spend years creating their project before they get it finished, these voters usually wait until the end of production to assign an Award. This way, if someone does not win at the time of filming, they can still feel like they had some success because they completed their project.
Oscar winners
One of the biggest reasons that people recognize the importance of film as an art form is because it has produced some incredible stories and messages. Films have taught us about many different things, from how to appreciate nature to how to approach life in general.

Popular movie genres
A lot of people think that movies are just one big, fuzzy blob with no clear divisions or genre categories. But there are actually several major genre classes in popular film theory. Some feel these groups have become too rigid and restrictive, but they still play an important part in how most people watch films.
So what are some of these genre types? Here are the top five!
The Horror Genre is probably the closest thing to what we normally call “gory” fiction like horror novels and scary movies. It was built upon the foundations of Gothic literature (think Dracula) and includes stories about ghosts, werewolves, vampires, etc.
A more specific sub-genre is called “slasher horror.” These stories feature at least three main characters who are all targeted by a violent murderer. The murderers usually seem normal before the killings, making it impossible to tell whether someone might be next.
Another type is called Sci-fi. This can include anything from space operas like Star Wars to zombie flicks to modern day thrillers where technology is used for both good and evil.
Action is another very common element in many movies. Stories often involve action scenes, which are exciting because of the intensity and speed with which they are done.
Romance is also a large part of many romantic comedies. Characters spend most of the story trying to find true love, so this category makes sense.
