How Disney Creates Astounding Animation

Addison Smith

Walt Disney once said, “Animation is probably the most difficult of all art forms. It takes many years to perfect.” He was not only referring to his own personal struggle with animation as he launched his career in the field, but also how hard it can be for people who are not experienced in this craft to understand the steps behind creating an animated movie.

There are several types of animations that use different techniques to tell a story. A narrative cartoon like The Lion King uses events and dialogue to create stories, while an action-packed movie like Toy Story relies more on fast scenes and fluid motion to keep audiences engaged.

This article will focus mostly on the first type of animation: storytelling cartoons. These are typically categorized into two groups depending on the length of the film. Short films are usually under 10 minutes long, whereas feature length movies are longer than that.

Feature length cartoons often begin with a plot or situation followed by some exposition (telling characters about something) and then a sequence of events narrated through conversations and/or actions. This process is repeated until the story comes to a conclusion, at which time the audience may want to give up because nothing significant happened, or they left before the end!

Fortunately, there are some tricks used by professional animators to help make their stories interesting. In this article, you will learn some helpful tips for making your next storytelling cartoon easier to watch and understand.

3D modeling

After creating your character, you’ll need to create a template or model of his or her face. This is done through what are called facial templates. These templates have different shapes that make up specific features of the human face.

Character designers use these templates when designing new characters for an animated movie. For example, they could take our previous car design and add in some cool feature lines or curves to create a more interesting shape. The animators then find someone with this template to help them draw the feature and tweak it slightly to match the character.

These people are referred to as texture artists and they work mostly doing hair and skin textures for the film.

After all the features are designed, they are saved into a digital file (3d mesh). Then those files get organized into a software package which uses algorithms to combine them and produce the final three dimensional look you see in movies.

2D to 3D

Another way animation has evolved is what’s known as 2D to 3D or sometimes referred to as flat to tall. This is when an artist draws a picture of someone or something completely from scratch, then they add depth by adding layers of paint or clay onto the drawn image.

The layer of paint that becomes three-dimensional is determined by where the camera is looking. For example, if the camera looks at the edge of a table leg, it will have thickness there!

This process can be done with any material like you would do painting, but most animators use plastic sheets or foam which are easily modified. Technically speaking, this isn’t really creating shapes, but more defining them.

By adding these new dimensions, the eye of the viewer is distracted slightly, making the audience feel relaxed and comfortable. It also creates some cool effects such as reflections and shades of color.

Key frames

An animation artist creates an illusion of movement by inserting little “keyframes” into their work. A keyframe is like a still frame in photography, except it adds depth to the image. For example, say you wanted your movie to show a car moving slowly across the screen. You would not just use a few quick shots, but instead would create a longer shot where the car is taking its time to move across the screen.

The more keyframes there are, the slower the vehicle seems to be traveling, creating that effect. More keyframes mean longer pauses between each one, which makes the film seem more natural or believable!

At this stage, the animator may also choose to add some fake movements or glitches to make the scene more interesting. For instance, if the driver was running very fast, he/she might slam on the brakes suddenly, causing an explosion of water. This looks less realistic than having a steady flow of water, but it adds detail and complexity to the piece.

Animation timelines

A movie with animated sequences is made up of several different lengths of time. These are called an animation timeline or production cycle.

The longest length of time is usually to write the script. After that, artists work on drawing pictures of the scenes in the screenplay. This process is known as pre-production.

Next comes casting, where actors are needed for each scene. Actors who are willing to play their part early get much better pay because they have invested into the project.

Once everyone has been cast, then filming can begin! Not every sequence requires people walking around nor does every sequence use special effects. Some just take place in one setting with no changes.

These are the ones that useanimate. You probably know how movies like The Lion King or Ferdinand shoot their parts (for example). But there are many other ways to achieve this effect.

After all the filming is done, the film needs to be edited. This takes away not only the shots but also any sounds that were left over.

Finally the finished product is seen by others! If you ever want to see your own masterpiece come alive, start creating animations.
