How Does The Entertainment Industry Make Money

Addison Smith

The entertainment industry is so complex that it’s almost impossible to define how exactly money is made. What people usually refer to as “the business model of the media” is really just one small part of what goes into creating content and getting paid for it.

The vast majority of this article will focus on how the studios, networks, and digital publishers make money from content you watch or read. But remember, these are not free to create!

Facilities must be rented out, electricity has to run, computers have to be maintained, all in order to produce and distribute content. And all of those things cost money!

As such, the next section will discuss some ways media companies earn revenue by offering services to other businesses. This article will also talk about why it’s important to remain loyal to sources of income when producing content.

Services like Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu are great examples of this. They offer their users large amounts of content at a lower price than buying it individually, which most people know is expensive.

But what many don’t realize is that these streaming service providers spend lots of money on advertising, which is where they get the money to pay for all of that content.

Running advertisements can be very costly, even before factoring in the expense of marketing and production. That’s why it’s important to support brands and advertisers who invest in creative campaigns.

Movie theaters

The other major source of income for the entertainment industry is movie theater revenues. There are two main reasons why this is such an important source of revenue. First, most people love going to the movies! Second, there are now more than 30,000 screens in our country that offer different sizes and types of theaters.

Some locations have large movie theaters with as many as eight or ten showings per day. Others may only have one showing at night, but it can still be a very popular movie.

Theaters usually charge around $15-20 per person for tickets, so they are quite expensive. However, what people don’t know is that you get a lot for your money when you go to a movie theater.

You get to enjoy the movie you choose to watch while sitting together and talking about all the parts of the film. Some restaurants might give you better food, but you would probably pay much more for the ambiance alone.

Streaming services

Another way major media companies make money is by offering online streaming service subscriptions. This gives you access to their content anywhere, anytime, without needing special equipment or software to watch it.

Streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime offer nearly every movie and show ever made for all users to enjoy.

These services usually cost around $10-20 per month depending on how much content you want to see. The more content you have, the cheaper your streamer will be!

Netflix alone boasts over 150 million subscribers who spend an average of about $6/month each. That’s almost half a billion dollars a year just from one company!

The entertainment industry continues to make a boatload of cash off of streaming sites.

But what are the ethical implications of this? What happens to the artists that earn nothing while watching movies? And how do we as individuals contribute to these corporations when we place orders?

We can always opt out of using streaming services by not buying them or by not subscribing. Hopefully others will follow suit and help spread the word about the harmful effects that spending too much time in the entertainment industry has on us.

TV shows

Creating television programs is expensive! A lot of companies rely heavily on the media to spread their message, so they are always looking for ways to get more exposure. By watching TV, you have already invested in this medium, which is why it is such a powerful way to promote a company.

Making a connection with an audience is what sets big screen movies apart from documentaries. The same goes for TV shows; without interesting stories and characters, people wouldn’t be investing time in them.

Media influencers are paid to advertise for products and services, so there's a wealth of knowledge out there that can help your business find new markets.

By creating and producing your own show, you get to control the content and convey your messages how you want to. You also earn money through advertising, syndication, royalties, and additional revenue streams like Amazon and Netflix.

Furthermore, most major networks pay producers and writers good salaries to contribute to the success of the show.

Movie rentals

One of the most common ways that the entertainment industry makes money is through movie rental services. Companies like Netflix, Amazon, and YouTube offer their customers the opportunity to watch movies and TV shows for free or low cost. Customers can then either keep the item for themselves or sell it back to the company if they want to avoid renting it again.

The companies profit from these sales by paying per-item fees and adding shipping costs onto the purchase. The more people use this service, the higher these fees become!

Netflix is one example of this. People pay around $8/per month for an account which includes one monthly plan to stream as many movies and TV shows as you want. This could be something new like The Mandalorian or something older like Aladdin. You get credit towards this toward your account for buying and watching them within 24 hours!

There are also some items included in the premium package which are not limited time only features. These include wider screen quality, personal recommendations, and other perks depending on what content the company produces itself.

The downfall of the industry

As we have seen, the entertainment business is not necessarily a fair field for everyone to enjoy it. It can be expensive to join or remain a part of this industry!

If you are already in this career then I applaud you for your dedication and passion for what you do. You should know that you are helping create dreams and fulfilling lives for many people.

But if you feel like the system is stacked against you, with no way to fix it, then maybe it’s time to look elsewhere.

Fortunately, there are ways to make money outside of the media and film/TV industry. Many of these opportunities don’t require too much experience either.

Popular culture

The entertainment industry makes its money through three main products that it markets to different audience demographics. They are movies, TV shows, and music. Each of these products has their own internal business model that is built around revenue streams and profit margins.

Music is one of the most profitable industries in America because it produces constant flow of income. Music is sold either as albums or songs, and people will spend whatever amount of money necessary to learn the song lyrics and music theory. This is how artists make their living off of music.

Film and television are both to some degree promotional tools for the next product. Movies and TV programs are used to advertise other things. Technology companies use film and TV show advertisements to promote themselves.

For example, Google uses media to market technology by producing their own films and showing them off. This way, people perceive technology as more exciting and cool. Health professionals use movie and TV commercials to encourage people to exercise and keep healthy diets.

The entertainment industry transfers this advertising effect onto other products. For instance, if you want to know what brand of shoes would look best on your feet, watch a few episodes of a TV show about fashion design.
