How Does The Entertainment Industry Make Money?

Addison Smith

The entertainment industry is so vast and there are so many ways to be part of it, from acting as a performer or actor, writing for films and TV shows, producing movies and TV shows, designing logos and merchandise, and more!

The way most people recognize the entertainment industry is through its huge amount of money it makes. This includes how much it earns in profits and what kind of royalties and fees it collects. These three categories make up almost all of the revenue that the media we watch gets paid out with.

Profits are the money left over after paying for things such as production costs and marketing expenses. For example, a movie may earn $10 million in profits but it cost $5 million to produce. Therefore, it earned $5 million more than it spent on production!

Royalties refer to payments made due to copyright laws. A small royalty can go quickly add up because some companies have lots of content people enjoy spending time watching or listening to. Examples include music, television, and video games.

A larger royalty goes mostly towards funding future projects.

Online streaming

Recent developments in technology have allowed for something that was once thought impossible- free entertainment! Technology has made it possible to access all of the content you want, anywhere, anytime. This is through what’s been coined as online streaming.

Online streaming comes in two main forms- direct to device streams and app streaming. Direct to device streams work similarly to how cable TV works today; you connect your smartphone or computer to a good streamer and watch. The difference is that instead of having to pay extra for premium channels like Netflix, You can get most of these services free!

App streaming is using an app on your phone to gain access to the content, much like how you would use YouTube to view videos. Some apps are even designed specifically to make money from watching movies and television shows. These applications cost either a subscription fee or a per movie or show purchase, with both being lucrative income sources.

Movie rentals

The other way that most of the entertainment industry makes money is by offering movie rental services. Companies like Netflix, Amazon, or Hulu offer their users a paid monthly service plan that allows them to watch movies and TV shows free with some limitations.

These companies also usually include an early access period to new season TV shows so people can enjoy them before they are officially released. This is very popular among people who want to stay up-to-date on what show’s new seasons have been announced as well as those who prefer watching at home instead of going out.

There is an additional cost for this though, typically around $10 per month. People often cite this as the reason why they stop using the service since it is already expensive. These fees add up quickly if you are someone who loves making frequent use of these apps!

Netflix has become such a staple in our lives because of how affordable and dependable it is. Many people know about it, but many don’t realize just how much money they spend on it each year.

Event tickets

The other major source of income for the entertainment industry is event ticket sales. Companies that produce films, television shows, or games often hold events where people can attend to see them. These events are typically movie premieres, film screenings, TV show taping, conference tours, or gaming tournaments.

Companies organize these events so people will want to buy a ticket because they want to be there. They also use the money from events to market their next project. Ticket purchasers get a taste of what the product is before buying a full price item, which helps boost sales.

The media covers these events, helping spread knowledge about the products and increasing audience exposure. Journalists gain access through sponsorship deals or paid advertising spots. Both help keep the companies popular and increase their follower count.

These events are not free for the organizers. People who pay attention to the media may have known ahead of time about an event but never bought a ticket unless it was super expensive or needed attendance. By having promotional event tickets available, you tip the scales in the company’s favor.

After Steven Spielberg’s The Empire Strikes Back, there is a scene where Luke Skywalker battles Darth Vader in an enclosed space. As they fight, droplets of blood fly off their hands and onto the other person.

As these two people struggle, more blood is shed which makes the surface area larger. This creates a reaction between each individual piece of blood and the surrounding air. It takes some time for this process to happen, but when it does, it releases a very fine spray of what we refer to as “aerosolized blood.”

This happens because as human blood comes into contact with oxygen, it changes from its liquid state to plasma. When enough blood is drawn out, you get your own volume of plasma which can be squeezed out through a small opening or puncture site.

That’s why after someone gets stabbed, you see lots of drops of blood falling to the ground. However, not all of those drops remain static: some are aerosolized due to the pressure that exists within the body.

When something dramatic happens like what happened in that movie theater, many people want to watch the next chapter of the story so quickly have it done! Therefore, bookstores need to stock up on copies of the new novel to satisfy reader demand.

Businesses such as Barnes & Nobles and Borders went bankrupt because they didn’t expect the popularity of the books they had on hand.

After creating an episode of their hit series, writers will often offer their services as a freelance writer to other companies for the creation of new material. These opportunities are very common in the television industry because most major networks have their own in-house creative teams that produce content for the channel.

Most of these writing jobs are for small segments or scripts that can be quickly written and edited. Since this is the case, there are many freelancers who work in the industry, so not only does your favorite show receive new material, but also its creators earn extra money.

Copyrighted material

The other major source of income for the entertainment industry is copyrighting new materials and distributing them to others. This is what we refer to as copyrighted content. Companies create new songs, movies, TV shows, and apps that they own the copyrights to. They are allowed to distribute these materials and get paid for it!

Music is one of the most common forms of copyrighted content. Artists need to secure their copyrights before they can start getting rewards for their work. Some people may not know this, but you do NOT have to be an artist to earn money from music.

There are many ways to benefit from artists’ hard work. For instance, you can write your own song lyrics or use a template to do so. You can also make art inspired by music and sell it! All of these applications, designs, and creative expressions are called fan artwork.

We here at Bplflw believe that every person should be able to enjoy and reap benefits from artistic expression.

The life of an artist

As we mentioned before, being an artist is a tough job that can be expensive. Luckily, the entertainment industry has figured out how to make money off of your talent while also keeping it legal!

Most artists agree that having a good manager or personal business executive you trust is one of the most important things for their success. They’ll take care of all the paperwork, financials, and logistics of running your career.

Managers will often charge per hour fees for their services which can add up quickly if they are doing everything from booking tours to negotiating contracts to helping you pick what products line/brand you should endorse.

There are many ways professionals in the music business make money beyond just charging hourly rates. Some get paid via royalty income (like when someone buys your album) or through performance and tour earnings, but the majority rely on strategic marketing strategies and influencer tools to reap the benefits.
