The reason why I call this feature “striking” is because it becomes very noticeable once it is done well. "Casablanca" is similarly referenced as important due to its depiction of romantic love, but very little feels authentic beyond Rick and Ilsa/Rick and Marlene. Even then, it can be argued whether their relationship was positive or negative.
I would argue that neither "The Graduate," nor "Casablanca" have much depth past what happened to the main characters.
Box office
In its opening weekend, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 made $128 million at the box office, which was not great but it did very well for what it is. It outdid its predecessor’s debut by over $20 million!
Spider-Man: Homecoming, however, had much better numbers than that of The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Spidey 3 debuted to more than twice as many dollars ($260 million) and went onto make nearly five times as much money (over $800 million).
This means that even though The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was higher grossing when adjusted for inflation, it only barely edged past the earlier film. When you factor in how expensive the movie was to produce, this isn’t too surprising.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 cost around $250-$300 million to make while Spider-Man: Homecoming cost about half of that. So although The Amazing Spider-Man 2 sold more tickets, it spent less money per ticket on advertising, filming, etc., therefore earning less cash for Disney.
