How Hollywood Treated Animal Actors

Addison Smith

Many people assume that animals in films are only used for entertainment, but this is not always the case. A large number of popular movies use animal actors to promote a product or message.

The media can influence how people perceive animals. When we see animals acting like humans in media, it may create a perception that all animals are intelligent and manipulative.

This could lead us to believe that other animals are capable of deceit and manipulation, which they are not. Animals make mistakes just like human beings do!

Many big companies actively use filming animals as advertisements or promotional tools. This includes using dogs to help sell cars, cats to endorse brands, and even elephants to market products.

These businesses pay professional trainers to work with the animals before filming so that they’re comfortable around others and learn about their behaviors.

Some even allow the animals to speak during the advertisement, proving that they understand what you want them to say. It is important to research your options before investing in an animal advertising campaign.

However, most people don’t know too much about the role animals play in marketing campaigns. In fact, some claim that using animal actors is the way business is done in the movie industry!

Businesses use clever strategies to gain attention, one of these being incorporating animals into their ads. More often than not, though, these tactics are questionable at best.

Early actors

While not as common, some early acting troupes did use animals to help you train your character. A few even paid them for their services!

Early film theorists believed that using an animal in place of human characters helped teach you how to read emotions. When someone looks at you or says something mean, what kind of emotion do you feel?

A dog may go off-leash and chase after a stick, so it teaches you about anger. Or a cat may get away with eating from its dish every day, which teaches you about greed.

These theories are pretty much debunked now, but back then they were very important to understanding dramatic expression.

As you can probably tell, not everyone loves using animals as acting tools. Some people feel that it’s exploitative to use non-human beings for financial gain.

Another complaint is that many of these practices are potentially harmful to both the animal and its potential future owners.

Some believe that while some animals do well in human homes, most don’t and becoming an owner could put them through unnecessary trauma or even hurt them.

Furthermore, there are sometimes ethical questions about whether it’s right to use endangered species for entertainment.

There have also been several reports of animals suffering due to filming procedures. For example, when dogs are left outside during hot weather, they may succumb to heat stroke.

When this happens, the dog can become very ill and need medical attention quickly. Therefore, someone must be present at all times to care for the animal.

Many have criticized animal actors for being exploited by the film industry, but they’re not totally correct. While it is true that some acting styles are more conducive to using animals as inspiration than others, most of what we see in movies today was heavily influenced or even completely manufactured with the help of an animal.

The use of non-human subjects as motivation or inspiration for human emotions has been around at least since ancient Greece. A famous example comes from The Trojan War when Hephaestus used his clever mind to inspire Achilles to battle.

In fact, there’s a mythological story about how Zeus himself inspired anger in Apollo through his trickery![1] In this version, Apollo wanted to know if Poseidon would cause a great flood so he asked him to take revenge on all humans who practiced usury (loaning money at interest).

Poseidon obliged and struck down all those who engaged in such practices, but afterwards he realized how much fun it was watching people cry while doing things like washing windows. He decided to keep them and made everyone his servants.

Zeus eventually got tired of listening to his brother whine so he tricked Apollo into letting him borrow one of his tricks. When Apollo played back the recording, he heard laughter and learned how to laugh.

Many people believe that animals have large hearts, but this is not true at all! Most species are built with thin skin and bone to help them blend in and conceal themselves from predators. This means they need a more substantial blood supply to survive, which can be expensive for filmmakers to source or create.

In fact, it’s almost impossible to find a movie where an animal needs their own heart because there just aren’t enough natural ones available. Even if there were, most would cost too much money to purchase or breed enough to fit into the scene you wanted to use them in.

There has been a lot of talk about how some big name celebrities don’t treat their dogs as well as they could possibly be treated due to their famous status, but what about our little friends? What about those who work with small furry creatures every day?

Many professionals only seem to know two types of animal actors- penguins and dolphins. While both of these are very interesting to watch, they are not everyone’s favorite way to spend time.

People are getting better though, especially since dolphin trainers have become quite popular again.

Movie animal facts

There’s been a lot of talk about how much animals are in our favorite movies, but what about the other way around? What about when an actor doesn’t use any animals as sources for their performance?

We look at the work of some very famous actors and there’s never anything like a dog or cat in sight. Sometimes it seems like they didn’t even want to be in that movie!

Acting is a skill that takes practice, but one thing you will always see is a desire to put in time into the art form. If someone has decided not to because they don’t feel like using animals as inspiration, then we should appreciate their decision instead of criticizing them for it.

Animal acting isn’t easy and it requires a lot of training, resources, and motivation, so why would anyone turn down the chance to learn something new?

Everyone is motivated by different things, and not every person is the same. We must respect eachothers decisions no matter what they are.

Movie animal stories

Many people may not know, but there is a rich history of animals acting in movies! It’s definitely not your average “animal friends” movie.

In fact, some would say that it’s almost impossible to make an animal friend movie these days due to our over-exposure to animatronics and computerized puppetry.

But before all those things existed, filmmakers had to rely more heavily on real animals for their storylines. And while many might think they’ve heard of every type of animal actor out there, we’re about to take a look at one very specific genre of film that includes quite a few well known characters.

So what are movie animal stories?

They’re basically any story where someone cares for or even loves an animal character as much as people usually care for human ones. These can be fictional stories like The Lion King or Bambi, or nonfiction tales like Life Is An Adventure For A Dog.

Animal actors that became stars

Many of today’s most famous animal actors were not always popular or well-known. In fact, some made a name for themselves by hurting, even killing, animals in film. But this is only because they are very skilled at acting!

Many people don’t know this, but some of our greatest movie legends used to work as an assistant director, production manager, or costumer on movies that featured trained animals.

These professionals - often called “animal trainers” - help prepare non-actors like yourself (or more likely, fictional characters) for their part in a scene where someone else interacts with a dog, cat, horse, etc.

By being familiar with such creatures, the trainer can ensure the animal behaves during filming and does so without causing injury or distress to it. This way, the involved person doesn’t have to worry about how they will react when they meet their beloved pet later!

A few examples of famous animal actors

Just ask any child what the Lion King is about and you’ll get lots of answers along the lines of ‘crocodiles’, 'lions', and/'Tambourines'.

But few know that Mufasa - father lion character - was once a real life tiger.

Likewise, Simba - son lion character - was originally a cheetah before he was raised as a housecat.

Many people may not know that some of the greatest acting tributes ever filmed feature animals! Some even go as far to say that they are one of the main reasons why certain scenes were so powerful, or even made you feel something when watching them.

Acting with animals is an incredible way to hone your talent, especially if you’re a beginner actor looking to perfect your craft. There are many ways to work with animals, from performing tricks for reward to filming whole conversations between two characters including dialogue.

Many famous movies use at least one major character who works closely with other species, whether it be a talking dog or cat, or even a bear or elephant. These films have paid homage to our love-affair with fur and feathers by giving us inspiration to connect with others more than before.

Here we will discuss five of the most well known movie animal stars and how their profession was created for them.
