How I Enter My House
After my parents died, leaving me with no guardianship, it took me quite some time to feel like a normal person.
I would stay up late at night thinking about how to fix our house, what things needed fixing, and who could do which jobs. It was difficult trying to put together an apartment complex while also being responsible for myself.
It took me months to realize that there is really only one way to enter your own house - through the front door!
At first, I didn’t understand what people were talking about when they mentioned “the difference between entering a room through the front or back door.”
But as time went by, it became increasingly clear to see.
The importance of this lesson will be made very clear in my story today.
Find a good entryway

Even if you’re not planning to do much housework, choosing an efficient entrance makes getting into the house more fun (or at least less frustrating).
Most people start their day in the kitchen, so why not make a great kitchen? A great entry way is an easy way to begin your morning with ease.
A beautiful entry way can be a place for decorations, such as plant baskets or picture frames. Or it can be a bench where you can put your shoes or bags, etc.
The door should also invite you inside by using bright colors and patterned materials. Matching the color of the paint with the room is another way to create momentum for entering the home.
Use the elevator

One of my favorite ways to enter my house is via the elevator! As you can probably guess, this is because it gives me a sense of safety and relaxation.
I have always felt comfortable riding elevators in buildings or cars, so I never really learned how to use them properly. But as an adult, there’s no reason to be nervous about using one!
Using the elevator for entry is definitely the most elegant way to do it. Luckily, there are some easy tips here that anyone can follow.
Know the code

After a house guest has entered your home, it’s important to know what police codes have been called so you can verify that they are allowed in. Some examples of these codes include “False alarm,” “Burglary suspects fled north across intersection,” or “Robbery in progress.”
It is our responsibility as residents to be aware of our community and protect those around us who live here. By knowing the codes for an intruder into your home, you will be able to confirm their legitimacy quickly.
Lock your doors at night
As we discussed earlier, leaving your house with the windows up is not a great idea unless you are certain that there will be no traffic or street activity after dark.
That’s why it’s important to lock your door! Locking your door makes it less likely someone else would enter your home while you’re away, and also gives you some extra protection in case anyone does break into your home while you’re gone.
It’s totally fine if you live in a complex with shared outside entrances, but still recommend locking your own front entrance.
Use lighting

Lighting is one of the most important parts of entering your house or car fully. If you do not have enough natural light, you will need to either use lamps or install windows or doors.
Natural sunlight is the best source of light, but if you cannot get enough of it, using an array of bulbs in lamps is your next choice.
A common way to illuminate a room is with soft white lights such as table lamps or florescent ones that are similar to what we normally call a “fluor” lamp. These work well to create a more neutral feeling space.
For additional illumination, put up some curtains or use shades to block out darker areas. You can also cover any dark spaces with bright colors to make them less uncomfortable to look at.
Avoid using heavy darks or strong artificial lights because they may hurt your eyes. This could be something like leaving a TV or computer screen on all night or using very strong interior lights when you wake up in the morning.
Be visible

As mentioned earlier, your house will be robbed at least once this week, so you need to be prepared! What kind of precautions do you make before leaving your home? You should definitely put away anything that might be useful as you are likely to get locked out during the process.
You can’t take too many things with you when being burglarized, especially if you don’t have much space in your car. If possible, leave your house with only what you can fit into your vehicle, or pick up some bags at a grocery store for convenience.
Be sure to check your home frequently while you are gone! Lock all doors and windows, turn off lights, check underneath furniture - even if it is not practical to carry around. Don’t forget about outdoor security either!
Remind yourself and others close to you where you left your valuables and never risk exposure by leaving something behind! Also, use an alarm system instead of locking everything down - professional security systems cannot be fooled easily.
Pick a good location

Before you enter your house, choose a good entry method. This includes choosing if you want to be unarmed or armed.
If you are comfortable being unarmed, then that is excellent! You do not have to worry about protecting yourself while entering your own home. However, it can be tricky for some people.
For example, with firearms there are rules about who may handle a gun. If this person does not feel safe with guns, they should not carry one.
Luckily, there are other ways to protect yourself from violence besides carrying a firearm. For example, you can use self-defense tools such as pepper spray, brass knuckles, and stiletto shoes.
These things can help you defend yourself against someone much bigger than you.
Tell your friends

After moving into my house, one of my biggest challenges was figuring out how to organize and manage my space.
I had a lot of things; I kept finding new ways to store them.
It’s hard to remember everything that you left behind when you move somewhere new. You pack up all your belongings and say goodbye to those who mean the most to you, but what happens next is going through the stuff you don’t need anymore.
Donating or throwing away items is definitely a worthy cause, but there are other ways to make room for new things in your life by organizing and purging your own possessions.
