How Is A Screenplay Written

Addison Smith

A screenplay is a piece of writing that tells a story, usually set in the past, present or future. The stories typically have several plots, scenes and/or times within them.

A good script will win you many awards, but it can be very difficult to write. It takes a lot of work and passion to put into it before it is finished. This is why most screenwriters never make any money from their work.

There are five main sections to a screenplay. These are the introduction, setting, plot, characters and dialogue.

The first two do not directly relate to each other, but they are important parts of your screenplay. The rest are all related to each other and longer than they seem.

This article will go more in-depth about how to write these different components for your screenplay.

Develop your theme or story

Now that you have done some writing, it is time to develop your screenplay! Most screenwriting courses will talk about introducing your main character, but they never really explain how to write an interesting protagonist.

A good protagonist must be someone who people can relate to. They should do things in the movie that we could do if we were characters in the scene. They should feel like us so we want to watch them succeed or fail.

Your readers will get involved with these characters and care more about their success than anything else. This is what makes a great leader.

Start to write

As we already mentioned, writing a screenplay is a pretty creative process that involves storytelling. So what kind of story you want to tell and how you want to tell it are important parts of your script.

The first thing you must do as a writer is a start to write! Once you have all of these steps down, then you can begin writing your script. Starting a screenplay is not like starting any other project or book; it takes more than just opening up your word processor or notebook and typing away.

You will need to know where to even begin with this step. Many writers get stuck because they don’t know what part of their script to work on next. They may also be too focused on the ending and forget about the rest of the story.

Start by making a note of something non-fiction material that made you feel passionate. This could be anything from reading an article about why sugar is bad for you to listen to music that makes you feel energetic. Your notes can be limited to only a few items so that you don’t overthink them.

Once you have your initial spark, find a way to connect those ideas in a narrative format. The easiest way to do this is to use a template or framework. There are many good ones available free online and somewhere you've probably seen one before.

Use those as a springboard to create your storytelling structure.

Outline and plan your script

Now that you have gathered all of the necessary pieces, it is time to organize them into a structure! This is the next step in writing your screenplay.

The first thing we recommend is to start at the beginning of your story and create an outline. An outline is simply a listing of events in order and bullets that describe each event. For example, if your movie was about two people who discover their passion for dancing, then the main event would be them dancing together. The second event would be their deciding to take lessons from someone else. And the third event would be them practising their new craft in a non-theatrical setting.

This process can easily be done through chapter divisions. So instead of having one long list, break up the events into chapters.

Now, some writers prefer to use index cards as an easy way to do this. Either method works well, but what matters most is how you feel about the final product.

Rewrite and edit

As mentioned before, writing a screenplay is a process that never really ends. You will be rewriting your script many times over! This comes in the form of re-writing individual scenes or sections, as well as editing the whole thing to make it flow better and improve the narrative.

When starting as a writer, I would recommend getting into the habit of taking one scene per day and trying to write a short story within it. Once you have written this short story, then you can move on to the next scene.

This way you are not only learning how to tell a story, but you are also improving your drafting skills by doing so. Plus, you get to take your time with each new piece which helps you feel more comfortable with the medium.

Once all of the scenes are put together, you can start editing. The first things to look for when editing a screenplay are grammar and spelling errors, as well as logical inconsistencies. Make sure everything makes sense and flows properly.

After these basics have been fixed, the next step is to try and bring the script’s characters closer. If their feelings seem a little flat, think about what could make them happier and play off those emotions.

Get an editor

As we learned, writing a screenplay is a tricky process. With that in mind, most screenwriting programs offer either an editing or creative writing degree or certification. An editing certificate typically takes two to three months to receive, while a creative writing diploma can take up to five years to achieve.

But before you start taking classes, make sure your career as a writer isn’t going to get ruined by a lack of education! For example, many people who have their degrees aren’t necessarily good writers so it may not be worth the investment if you just want to learn how to write well.

That said, educating yourself about story structure, character development, and other fundamentals is all very helpful when getting started as a novelist. The same goes for achieving this goal as a playwright!

Some of the top authors were educated in literature or drama at a highly-regarded university, but never put pen to paper until they found someone, they considered to be professional and knowledgeable. So don’t feel like you need to rush into becoming a literary genius - instead, find someone who can help you along the way.

Produce a draft

Once you have determined what genre your screenplay is, it’s time to start writing!

Producing the first draft of anything takes work and dedication. It's not easy reading through all of the stories out there and picking out good concepts or themes, then reworking them into yours.

But I can tell you from experience that it will be one of the hardest things you ever do. You will fall in love with every scene and every line, but none of that matter if no one else does. If you are ever struggling to get into writing mode, take some breaks and come back later.

Edit again

Writing a screenplay is a lot of work, which is why there are so many screenwriters in this industry! To be a successful writer, you have to edit yourself and your writing.

It is very common for writers to put a large amount of effort into their script and then show it to someone who calls them out on everything from the plot to the characters. That is okay as long as you take the time to re-edit your movie.

The most important thing about editing your film is remembering that you can always make it better. You do not need anyone’s approval to keep rewriting until you get a version you feel is good enough.

There will probably be times when nothing seems to change how the story is written but diving in and doing some research may help you come up with new ideas or at least give you some inspiration.

Finding outside sources and experimenting with different styles can also aid in giving your script an overall refresh.

Read and revise

Writing a screenplay is a tricky process that can easily get messy if you are not careful with it. There are many ways to write a script, and most good writers use a variety of tools and strategies to convey their message.

This could be through direct speech-to-speech or voice-over narration, third-person narrative, first-person narrative, etc.

There are some basic rules when writing a screenplay though. Starting with a strong story is the number one thing needed to succeed as a writer. Once this has been established, then the next step is to identify your characters and determine what makes them react in certain situations.

Once these two points have been met, then the last stage is to put all of this information together into a cohesive whole. This is where things can start to become very difficult!

Luckily, there are many great resources available online and via books for writers to look at different methods to approach their craft.
