The term “urban” has lost its true meaning in our society. Technically, anything within 10 miles of downtown is considered urban these days. This includes almost every city you can name!
The word “city” itself has also become very ambiguous. Many people associate it with only having wealthy people living in it, or being expensive to live in.
Urbanization occurs when large populations congregate into a small area, giving rise to social tensions as well as opportunities for economic growth. It also creates an environment where creativity flows and innovation happens.
This is why many major cities have flourished over time- they offer something unique that attracts new residents. They are rich sources of income due to their vibrant culture and economy.
Los Angeles is one such city. Not only does it feature some of the best weather in America, it offers plenty to do year round! Whether you are looking to spend your money or make some cash, there are things to do here at all times.
Division between rural and suburban Angelenos
Almost half (46%) of LA County residents were categorized as either rural or suburban in 2016, according to data from the California State Department of Finance. Only 9% lived in what was described as central city/downtown.
However, this doesn’t tell the whole story. Almost 2 million individuals reside outside of LA proper but still consider themselves part of the inner-ring suburb population.
The Valley
The term “Valley” typically refers to the lower part of California, including the cities of San Francisco, Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, Palo Alto, Redwood City, Menlo Park, Atherton, and others. This area is sometimes referred to as the Golden State because it seems like everything in this city is always going up!
This area has one very important quality that makes it unique - almost everyone here is rich. There are many expensive restaurants and shopping districts, which helps contribute to the perception.
However, not all parts of the valley feel like you have to be wealthy to enjoy things. You will find your share of affordable attractions and amenities. Take advantage of them!
The locals call this region the “Google Zone” due to its popularity with Google, but there are lots of other big companies located within the boundaries of the valley.
Businesses come and go, but the presence of large tech corporations keeps drawing new people in. These employers offer great salaries, free food, and social events, so most individuals do not mind being surrounded by a lot of people who want what they want.
West Hollywood
Located just west of Beverly Hills, West Hollywood is known for its eclectic mix of restaurants, boutiques, nightclubs, and entertainment venues. With so many things to do in this area, it can be difficult deciding where to go next!
West Hollywood has become quite the destination with visitors looking to enjoy some of the best shopping districts around as well as top-quality dining options. Many people call this neighborhood “the most beautiful place you will ever live” because of how aesthetically pleasing it is.
Many believe that this is one of the main reasons why large population growth has occurred here. People are attracted by the beauty of the city and want to make their home here. If you are visiting from outside of California or have lived in other parts of America, it may come as a surprise to learn how urbanized this community really is.
There are actually very few areas within West Hollywood that are considered rural. Most people agree that The Grove is an excellent way to spend time during your stay here. This is a popular tourist attraction filled with great eateries, shops, and shows.
Another major landmark is The Abbey, a church located across the street from The Grove. It was designed in the Gothic style and features stunning architecture and sculpture decorations. During Sunday services, there is always music being played which makes for an unforgettable experience.
Beverly Hills
Located in the southern part of greater LA, Beverly Hills is known for its large mansions and rich residents. It has some of Londons highest taxes making it expensive to live here.
Beverly Hills was originally an oil ranch owned by Henry Brevoort. He built his house there in 1890 and it became one of the most famous buildings in America, drawing many wealthy people to own a home or apartment there.
Since then, more than 1 million square feet of space have been torn down to make way for even larger homes and apartments. This has caused the average price per sq foot to increase dramatically, only adding to the cost of living here.
Many celebrities have made their name from owning or renting property in this area, creating a buzz around the community. Some use it as a place to retreat and re-focus after being successful elsewhere, while others enjoy having a close-knit group of friends they visit at home every night.
Overall, people are very positive about living in Beverly Hills. Many praise the quality of life here but complain about the high tax rates.
The Sunset Strip
The famous “Sunset Strip” is that area of west Hollywood bounded by La Crescent Avenue to the north, Western Boulevard to the south, Santa Monica Boulevard to the east, and Vermont Avenue to the west.
The name “Sunset Strip” was first used in the 1940s when movie stars would hang out along this street. Since then it has become synonymous with flashy, over-the-top nightlife. Bars here typically have big neon signs, loud music, and large crowds.
But the nature of the strip has changed quite a bit since its early days. In the 1970s, many bars closed down as drinking laws were more strictly enforced and people drank less alcohol.
In recent years, though, the popularity of the Sunset Strip has surged due to several reasons. More movies are being made in California (making it easier to book filming time) and thus bringing in larger audiences. Also, technology makes it easy to spread word about a new bar or restaurant so that more people know about it.
West Los Angeles
Western parts of Los Angeles are often referred to as “West LA” or simply, “The Westside.” This is due in part to the area having its own distinct culture that sets it apart from other areas.
It is considered to be more affluent than other neighborhoods, with larger houses and lots surrounded by beautifully manicured lawns and gardens. Some say this perception comes from seeing almost every house in The Westside show off their beautiful property including swimming pools, tennis courts, and large garages.
A lot of well-known celebrities live here, making it seem even more prestigious. A few examples include Angelina Jolie, Drew Barrymore, Taylor Swift, and Justin Timberlake. Many people associate these individuals with wealth, so they're perceived as rich because of where they reside!
Another reason why this area gets tagged as wealthy is due to the schools here. Most are expensive private schools such as St. John's University, UCLA, or Southwestern College. These universities have very high tuition fees which only adds to the perception.
However, there are some less glamorous reasons for this reputation. For example, many businesses cater towards the entertainment industry, offering services like photoshoots and acting classes. Because of this, jobs can be quite competitive and not everyone who wants one has access to them.
This may contribute to an environment where only those who already have money succeed, creating a cycle that perpetuates the perception.
East LA
Eastern Los Angeles is home to some of L.A.'s most diverse communities. It's also one of the city's highest poverty areas, making it difficult for many residents to afford food, shelter, and clothing.
Many people who live in eastern Los Angeles have little access to good public transportation. This makes it expensive and time-consuming to get to work because you have to rely on cars or taxis.
It can be hard to find employment opportunities here as well. There are not too many large businesses in this area, so finding work can be tough.
Overall, political tensions in east LA are high due to the community being targeted by law enforcement for racial profiling and excessive police force.
