How Large Is Los Angeles City

Addison Smith

The term city size comes up in relation to many different things: how large or small your town is, whether a given area of land or neighborhood is considered part of an urban center, and what kind of boundaries there are for defining where one community ends and another begins.

It also comes up when talking about the size of cities themselves- how much space within a municipality a given population requires to live. This includes both total areas like downtowns and wealthy neighborhoods as well as more suburban environments with larger parks and green spaces.

City sizes can be determined in two ways: by calculating gross statistical areas (GSA) or functional municipal areas (FMA). Both use similar math formulas, but GSA calculates it slightly differently than FMA.

This article will go into detail about which formula to use, why they matter, and some examples using data from California. You will learn that Los Angeles takes up a very big amount of real estate!

The population of Los Angeles

According to most sources, the official census tally for the city of LA is over 1 million people! This makes it not only one of the largest cities in America, but also the second-largest metropolitan area in the United States (only Chicago has more).

However, this figure is misleading because it does not include all those who live in the surrounding areas that make up our city. For example, if you do not count Beverly Hills as part of the city then the total drops significantly.

In fact, according to some estimates, there are closer to 2.5 million residents living within the boundaries of what we consider “the city” of LA. These numbers include both long term residents and short term visitors so they are much higher than just the census figures!

Furthermore, many large corporations have their headquarters here which means lots of employees and significant tourism. An obvious example would be Amazon with its famous HQ2 and growing employee base.

The borders of Los Angeles

Many people’s perception of what makes up the city limits of LA is wrong. It isn’t just about how close you are to the beach, or whether there are mountains in the distance.

It takes more than that to make something qualify as “the city.” For example, even though Hollywood is very popular, it is not considered part of the city due to its suburban nature.

The city limit for LA actually includes all areas within the municipal boundaries (defined here as 0-1 mile from any water body) plus Lake Washington, Griffith Park, and parts of Santa Monica and Malibu. This makes the official size of LA almost twice that of what most people consider the city!

Area such as Universal Studios and Disneyland do not count towards this total because they are surrounded by other cities and counties. However, these sites are major tourist destinations so including them in the city limit helps promote the area and encourages tourism.

The climate of Los Angeles

Climate is described as the average weather conditions at a place over time. Due to the city’s close proximity to the ocean, LA has very unique climatic conditions that affect how people live their lives.

LA experiences extremely hot summers and cold winters due to its high altitude. This creates an interesting dynamic because most naturally occurring disasters (hail, thunderstorms, floods) are caused by warm air being replaced by colder air.

This isn't usually the case in lower regions where winter storms occur. Since there's less space for cold air to expand into, it sometimes doesn't fully develop until it reaches higher ground.

A similar phenomenon occurs during heavy rainfall events which cause rising water levels that can reach beyond your home or business property. Because there's less empty space for moisture to disperse in, flooding can get worse quickly.

In fact, one of the reasons why flood waters don't always recede after a rain event is because they're constantly replenished from groundwater.

The history of Los Angeles

Los Angeles is constantly growing, changing, and expanding to meet the needs of those living in and traveling through its borders. It’s difficult to pinpoint exactly when or how big city status was achieved for LA, but we can be pretty certain that it happened sometime after A.D. 1100. By this time, there were at least 6,000 people residing within an 800-mile radius of what would become known as the “City by the Water."

Prior to this period, Southern California consisted mostly of small native tribes with only a few hundred members each. These early inhabitants lived off the land and water resources, sometimes even farming near sea shores.

It wasn't until around 1500 that larger communities began emerging. Spanish explorers brought along new settlers who established urban colonies throughout the area now referred to as "California." Many of these cities survived past 1750 due to their rich natural resource deposits like gold and agriculture.

In fact, Southern California's agricultural legacy still has strong roots today. Some of our favorite foods are directly linked to the region's agrarian past - think avocado, citrus, and grapes!

After the Mexican Revolution broke out in 1848, Mexico lost half of its territory including what would later become California. This left many Mexicans displaced from their homes and farms. Many of them relocated to America looking for a better life.

Many settled in the southern part of the state which became more densely populated than ever before.
