However, even though there are now more public spaces for people to read, some communities have seen a decrease in library service due to funding cuts or shifts towards online resources.
Many large cities across America face this challenge as they try to preserve their sense of community while also investing in educational opportunities for their residents. Fortunately, you can help save your local library by doing two things: donating money and volunteering at your local branch.

USC libraries
The University of Southern California (USC) has one of the largest academic library systems in the world! Their university-wide system is called the College and Information Technology Services Library ( CITSL).
This library consists of eight regional information centers and over 1,000 individual branch or study space locations across campus. There are also twenty mobile laptop labs that students can use to access resources and materials anywhere they have an internet connection.
These laptops are designed specifically for student research so they include unlimited usage of Google Suite applications such as Gmail, Docs, and Sheets. All of these components are free.
Overall, there are more than 2 million books and media items available through VISA card payment at any time. This includes online book rentals, eBooks, DVDs, and music collections.
Los Angeles Public Library
The Los Angeles Public Library (LAPL) is one of the largest libraries in America, with over 1,300 locations across its 12 branches. It is also one of the most used free resources for students. Over 60 million people have visited the LA library website at www.lapl.org to check out books, use their services, or both!
The LAPL was founded in 1853 when there were no public buildings where individuals could access literature. Since then it has transformed into an essential resource that anyone can enjoy.

There are many ways to contribute to the mission of the LA PL. You can work in any department - marketing, circulation, business operations, etc. -or you can become part of the leadership team by serving as a librarian, director, manager, or trustee.
People come from all over to be involved with the LAPL and we would never limit the opportunities it offers unless we ourselves were limited due to financial constraints. If you want to help others gain knowledge and develop literacy skills, then the LAPL is the right organization for you.
Van Nuys Public Library
The van nu library is located in south central los angeles just off west melrose avenue and north vanden berge boulevard in the city of van nuey. This library has many resources available to use for students. It offers free internet access, wireless laptops, magazines, newspapers, movies, games, and technology classes.
The librarian at this library is very friendly and helpful. He or she will go out their way to help you with any question or problem that may arise. They have a computer lab where students can check out computers and software to use. There are also quiet study areas where people can relax before going back to work or school.
This library does not offer cards but users can connect to the google account to access your information. This includes email, photos, and other things such as last active payer source, address, etc.
Downtown Library
The downtown library is an incredible place to spend your time. It boasts of having more than 2 million books, 250+ media vendors, 65 computer stations, 20 group study rooms, free wi-fi, and a teen area with games and snacks.
The space was designed by renowned architect Mario Ciampi and opened its doors in 2004. Since then it has become a gathering spot for residents and tourists looking to connect with others and learn new things.
Many people enjoy coming here for reading or research purposes. There are over 1.2 million visits per month which makes this library very popular.
Another reason why people visit the downtown library is to use their services. For example, they offer educational programs such as afterschool tutoring and courses like literacy and math. These classes are FREE!
Some other amenities include wireless internet access, phone charging stations, self check-out machines, and printers. All of these resources make it easy to do work from the library while staying connected with everything else.
East Valley Library
The East Valley Library is one of nine libraries that make up the LA Galaxy Public Library system. It is located at 9600 E Colorado Blvd, Santa Clarita, CA 91355-0100.
The East Valley Library was built in 2001 as part of an overall plan to bring more library services to Southern California. At the time it opened there were only five other public libraries in the area. Since then, this branch has become very popular due to its central location and wide range of resources available.
Many people enjoy using the East Valley Library because of all the amenities that it offers. There are ninety study rooms with computers and free wifi, a large collection of books and magazines, twenty-four hour access, self check out facilities, and monthly events such as art classes or fitness sessions.
These features not only help individuals find new hobbies but also give them somewhere to go when they want to get some work done. Because the East Valley Library is so accessible, it has been used for many things including job searches, homework assignments, and just plain reading!
It is estimated that over half a million people use the East Valley Library yearly which makes it one of the most well known libraries in the county. In fact, the number of visitors had doubled since 2006!
This growth shows how much the community appreciates the service the East Valley Library provides.
West Valley Library
Located just outside of Chatsworth, west of Summerlin, and just north of Woodland Hills, the West Valley Library is one of five library systems that make up LA County’s public libraries. It was founded in 1975 as an independent system with only six staff members and two mobile carts.
These days, it boasts over 250 employees, eight full time librarians, and three part-time librarians. The WVLA has a total collection of more than 2 million books, DVDs, CDs, magazines, and other materials!
It also hosts educational events such as book discussions, movie screenings, and art exhibitions to inspire readers, learners, and artists. In fact, these events attracted 12,500 attendees last year!
And while you don’t have to be a student or work at the school next door to enjoy the resources here, there are still lots of ways to take advantage of this rich trove of knowledge and entertainment.
You can check out a card for one week, or even forever if you like what you find! And when your visit is done, return everything where you found it so others can use the space too.

Northridge Public Library
The Northridge branch of LA County libraries is located in Calabasas, California. It opened its doors to the public in September 2002 as an expansion project.
The library was designed by ODA Architects and built by Turner Construction Company. During construction, both architects and contractors made several discoveries about ancient human remains that were buried under the site.
Archaeologists have determined that these fossils belong to at least eight different hominid species. Some are even older than six million years! They have also found artifacts such as pottery shards and animal bones.
These finds show how advanced early humans were for their time. This has allowed us to learn more about our ancestors and the way they lived.
Since the discovery of the fossilized skeletons, staff members have been trained in how to care for them properly. All of this work has helped preserve the specimens so we can continue studying them.
After all of this, it was decided that the best place to display the skulls and skeletal fragments would be in a museum. Because of this, the Northridge library closes each year during off-season for conservation purposes.
This allows archaeologists to access the materials without disrupting the natural preservation process. After finishing their studies, the material goes back into the collection where it can be studied later.
Cerritos Library
The Cerritos Public Library opened its doors to the public for the first time on September 17, 1975. This was two years after voters passed an initiative that allocated money towards establishing a library here.
The new building is one of five designed by well-known architect Robert Taylor. He also designed the famous Robindale Shopping Centre which has since been demolished but left his mark in South Africa as the Civic Auditorium there.
He designed this library with large picture windows looking out over surrounding areas. These windows allowed people outside to look into the space and be inspired by what they saw.
His design was influenced both by the clean lines of art museums and his love of nature. He called it ‘naturemedicine’ because it reminds us we are part of nature and our surroundings have benefits for us.
This was important to him as he felt medicine had similar effects on patients.
