The rides at Universal Studios are some of the most well-known attractions in Southern California, if not America as a whole. Some people may feel that they have “seen it all” when it comes to ride experiences, but there's always something new being introduced into the lineup, whether it be an entirely different type of attraction or just a newer version of an old favorite.
As we're about to look at our top five least expensive things to do at Universal Studios, I would like to address two important points before moving forward. First off, although these activities are usually free, that does not mean you should run around and do them without control or supervision. Second, even though some of these can easily be done alone, none of these require very large amounts of space outside of the facilities available to you.
This article will talk about how to spend your time at Universal Studios doing things for no cost whatsoever.
The Revenge of the Mummy ride
This is one of the most popular rides at Universal Studios, offering guests an incredible experience that will have them cheering for minutes. On this adventure, you’ll be guided through the Egyptian afterlife as you follow the journey of Imhotep, the legendary sorcerer-architect who designed his own tomb. You’ll get to explore all of its areas including the catacombs, where he hid artifacts before his death.
As you make your way down into the depths, you’ll encounter several deadly traps left by his spirit. Luckily, you’ve got over 30 years worth of tricks up your sleeve!

With more than 2 million rides per year, it is important to know what kind of experiences you will get with every visit. Is it worth paying extra for an immersive experience?
The short answer is yes! There are several reasons why experiencing a theme park like no other way is necessary.
For one, good immersion into a genre or area of media can help develop understanding and appreciation for that content, as well as expose potential new audiences to interesting stories or characters. This also creates strong emotions which are integral parts of the experience.
Another reason is cost-effectiveness. Experiencing a roller coaster may be expensive but it is very affordable compared to staying at a hotel outside of the city or taking a bus tour. More and more cities are offering free or cheap transportation in and around their areas making extended stay and tours unnecessary.
And lastly, there’s the fact that not everyone enjoys being immersed in things related to cartoons, movie franchises, or even scary movies and storylines.
The Wizarding World of Harry Potter ride
Let’s talk about one of my favorite rides in The Wizarding World - Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry! This is by far the most popular ride, attracting over 1 million guests per year. It almost feels like you are walking through the sets of a movie as you navigate your way through the castle setting and experience all of the attractions within this area.
Hogwarts Castle is an interactive attraction where you get to explore different areas and learn more about the wizarding world. There are eight main rooms that focus on different aspects of teaching young wizards how to be witches or wizards. Each room represents a chapter in the book series written by J.K. Rowling.
The Jaws ride
In 1994, Steven Spielberg released his latest movie, which he also directed, titled Jurassic Park. Since then, it has become one of the most well-known franchises in film history. Not only is it known for its fast paced action scenes and incredible special effects, but it also introduced us to some very memorable characters as well.
One such character was Dr. Alan Grant, played by Benjamin Walker. He was an immunologist who worked for InGen (the company that sponsored the creation of theme parks with genetically modified dinosaurs) before they were attacked by their creations.
Grant’s role in the story revolves around the fact that he helped create dinosaur DNA so that other intelligent creatures could be made. Unfortunately, this backfires when some predators decide to use these dino genes to make more of themselves!
In the movie series, we see several instances where guests try to capture or kill the monsters while they are still alive. This creates an opportunity for our main protagonist to demonstrate the effectiveness of his newly designed vaccine.
Since the vaccine works by eliciting antibodies against the predator’s own genetic material, there is no way to re-create what you did before without suffering the same consequences. It therefore makes sense that InGen would want to give away as many doses of the vaccine as possible, since anyone who gets sick can come and get their free medicine right away.
The Mummy ride
The The Mummy ride is one of the most iconic rides in all of theme parks. When it opened back in 2001, there was much talk about how scary the experience would be for young children. Now as an adult, this ride definitely does not appeal to anyone who prefers their experiences more action packed!
The Mummy ride takes around twenty minutes to go through and features several special effects such as water explosions, fake blood, and plastic surgery. Although some may find these effects disturbing or even frightening, they are also very entertaining to watch.
The main character of the ride is Imhotep, who has been raised from his ancient grave by scientists. He now lives with them and learns about technology and science. His teacher happens to be Anck-Su-Namun, the last survivor of the royal dynasty he once served.
Imhotep eventually finds out that his family tree goes beyond just him and Queen Nefertiti, and that he has another ancestor: the mummy himself. This makes him want to return home so that he can begin preparing to meet his death the right way.
He creates a plan to infiltrate the Temple of Ra where the next phase of his life will take place, but things quickly get complicated. It seems like every person he meets wants to save or use the mysterious artifact he possesses which powers up his mummified body.
The King Kong 360 3D ride
Let’s talk about one of the most popular rides at Universal Studios, The King Kong 360-degree Adventure! This is not your average roller coaster experience. Rather than racing through a theme park like setting, you get to explore everything around you while riding this thrill attraction.
The Tower Bridge scene in Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey uses advanced technology to make it seem as though you are sitting in an airplane flying over London. In King Kong, however, they go one step further by having you climb all throughout the ride up several different structures.
These settings include climbing ladders, staircases, and even helicopters! It is truly a sight to see and feel how interactive the environments become.
The Monsters, Inc. ride
This is one of the most popular rides at Universal Studios! In fact, it was so beloved that they made an additional version just for kids. It opened in 2016 as Monstropolis Labs, with more roomy seats and less thrill factor.
The main reason why this ride is so popular is because it gives you a really cool experience. You get to explore the secrets of what makes monsters scary by creating your own scares. As guests of the park, there’s nothing wrong adding some extra adrenaline via thrilling experiences.
However, this isn’t necessarily a good thing when compared to giving people opportunities to grow and learn. By taking part in these types of experiences, the ride doesn’t help individuals develop their courage or self-confidence.
Many adults who grew up during the ride’s early years now suffer from fear of heights due to the ride’s use of ramps and moving vehicles. These fears can sometimes last a lifetime, which is obviously not ideal.
Fortunately, though, there are ways to reduce the effects of the ride while still having fun. Two of those strategies include using the bathroom before riding and wearing comfortable footwear.
The Simpsons ride
One of the most well-known attractions at Universal is The Simpsons Ride, an interactive experience where you are taken through a journey as Homer, one of TV’s biggest sitcoms. You will get to visit all sorts of settings and scenes from the show while going down several thrilling rides!
The attraction was designed by Chris Markert, who also created the Amazing Adventures of Spiderman coaster at Islands of Adventure. He incorporated many references to the show such as Sideshow Bob’s Museum and Duff Brewery.
A lot of work went into creating The Simpsons Ride, making it not only entertaining but highly immersive as well. Because everything in the park is recognizable to people that have seen the show before, there are lots of similarities between this ride and what has already been established.
It is very difficult to tell whether or not someone visiting for the first time knows what The Simpsons is and which characters they feature. This can be both a good and bad thing because some may find it hard to enjoy the ride if they do not know what is happening. However, for loyal fans it is perfect because now they can rewatch episodes and connect with new features even more.
Overall, The Simpsons ride is a great way to spend your day at Universal Studios Hollywood! If you have never watched the show then this would make a perfect introduction to start watching.
