The studios pay for part of the production costs (the filming, editing, and marketing) out of their own pocket, but the rest comes from ticket sales and donations. The more people that go to the movie, the higher chance there is that the film will be successful and funded later.
There are also royalty fees that the studio has to pay for using copyrighted material such as characters and stories. These can add up very quickly!
