What it is today
The area that is now called “Hollywood” was once an oak tree plantation owned by actor Thomas Lynch, Jr. He gave up his ownership in this large piece of land after he died in 1864 at age 32. It took almost 100 years for someone to develop what would become one of Los Angeles’ most famous neighborhoods.
In 1900, entrepreneur William Rawn purchased 65 acres of vineyard-covered hills in North Hollywood with plans to build housing for workers who wanted to enjoy nature close to their jobs. His vision was to create a neighborhood where people could live, work, and play within walking distance of each other.
He coined the term “California Living” to describe his goal, and California Living Company was born in 1902. Over time, more houses were built and the company flourished under the leadership of CEO Earl Cravens. In 1938, Cravens sold the company to investors including singer Bing Crosby and oil tycoon Humble Irons.
Cravens kept control as chairman until his death in 1965 when The Village Companies (later renamed to just VILLAGE) bought out the rest of the shareholders. Since then, VILLAGE has continued developing and expanding THE WOODS!
Today, there are over 5,000 homes and condos in Hollywood and Vine, making it one of the largest residential communities in America. There are also many restaurants, shops, gyms, and services nearby.
