Answer: Los Angeles receives enough rain to make almost two million gallons of water per day. On average, we receive 10 inches (25 cm) of rain per month which averages to around 2 feet (60 centimeters) annually.
However, due to variation in weather patterns, we go up and down as far as 20 inches (50 cm) or less at a time! This means there were times when very little water fell from the sky and others when many days had lots of rain.

So instead of telling you how much rain fell in each area of LA, we will use statistical tools to determine how likely it is to get at least one day with at least two drops of rain in each region.

The first one happens when large amounts of water fall extremely quickly. This is called intense precipitation. Intense precipitation can cause flooding by rushing down hills, onto roofs, and into low areas. It also takes longer for water to go down vertical surfaces like mountains or buildings.
The second reason that floods occur in Southern California is because we have almost no natural protective borders around rivers and streams. There may be some vegetation along the banks, but nothing substantial!
Los Angeles has many tall buildings close to waterways which help prevent flooding, but this doesn’t happen often.
In fact, most of the city was built after World War II, when such floods were much more common.
Floods are scary, but they are totally avoidable unless you let them take place. If people would only maintain their homes and property, there wouldn't be too many floods.

1) Average rainfall in Los Angeles

With almost 6 months of recorded data, we can look at our average monthly rainfall for the city of Los Angeles!
We will be using an easy formula to determine this value. The average is calculated by taking the total amount of time multiplied by one half the length of time per year (or month). For example, if there are 12 months in the year then each month has 30 days so one third of a year is 9 months which makes one half 9 years. So, let’s use an easier case: March has only two days so we will not include it when calculating the average.
The average for all twelve months is 5.5 days or 0.46 inches of rain! This seems low since it includes zero days but remember that three-fourths of the year have less than 2 days of rain so most of the time you would win this contest even though it was a wet day once in a while.
Now that we know the average, how much rain did we get? Let’s check!
Evidence: April had 4.6 inches of rain which is equal to five and a half days of rain! That means we broke the record with nearly a full inch more than the previous month!
June also set a new rainfall record with 11.

When it comes to average annual rainfall, South LA receives an average of 39 inches, West LA gets 36 inches, North LA gets 33 inches, and East LA gets 28 inches.
South LA has slightly higher elevation than other areas which allows for more atmospheric pressure, so rain falls longer there!
The highest amount of precipitation occurs between November and April, with an average of 59 days with measurable amounts of rain. This is also the rainy season in Southern California as well.
Los Angeles’s most popular parks like Griffith Park or Santa Monica Beach are surrounded by buildings and street cars that limit how much water can soak into the ground. Many nature lovers feel this lack of green space is what is turning our city into one big desert.

2) Amount of rainfall in the different parts of Los Angeles

The most amount of rain that can be accumulated in an area is called its “rain gauge” or “precipitation intensity.”
This depends on two things: how large the area is, and what time period is being analyzed for total amounts.
For example, if we were to analyze one year’s worth of data (from October 1st through September 30th), then our precipitation intensity would be 0.1 inches per hour. This is because there are 24 hours in a day, and each hour has 0.01 inches of water deposited from precipitation.
So if we were to measure the average daily rainfall over a month, then this monthly average could add up to more than one-hour of deposition per hour, which equals one inch of water deposited per hour.
However, due to the fact that we are analyzing only one year of data, this monthly average cannot deposit as much water as it possibly could in a shorter amount of time.
The reason why this does not make sense is because there was no way for all of the water to seep into the ground during the short amount of time measured here.
In other words, there was not enough time for all of the surface water to go down.
