Early pioneers of animation

Many consider Walt Disney to be the father or founder of modern animated film-making, but that is definitely not true! The first person to put together stories with pictures or animating characters was someone many years earlier!

The term ‘animated’ movie does not refer to using moving images, but rather incorporating live action scenes set in front of a background (or frame) of drawn or painted imagery. These are referred to as interludes or flashbacks.

These early films used very few special effects and relied heavily on storytelling, acting, and music to bring in the audience.

The birth of cartoon characters

But, film historians agree that the first true animated feature length film must have been produced by Belgian filmmaker Paul Wiegrefe in 1908. He called this new medium Les Aventures du Père Lafleche (A Father Rabbit’s Adventures).

New technology came into play

Technology has always played an important part in animated films, but it’s really taken off more recently with the advent of computer-generated imagery (CGI). Some may even call this new era “anime culture.”

In fact, many people now consider The Lion King to be anime!

Prior to CGI, cartoon characters were mostly hand drawn or painted. These artists would work long hours under heavy pressure, which is why most classic cartoons are considered timeless and beautiful.

With CGI, animators can create virtually any character at any time. This allows for much faster production and smoother animations than before. It also means we get newer and better looking characters every year!

But what makes a film qualify as “animated?” That is the tough question. Many people refer to anything that uses moving pictures as animation, so technically anything digital is eligible. However, most people understand the term “cartoon” to mean something that contains little human elements besides facial expressions.

Modern animation

Recent animated features such as The Lion King, Finding Dory, Minions, Captain America: Civil War, Despicable Me 3, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Incredibles 2, and Frozen show that there’s no limit to what filmmakers can do with this art form.

Animation has come a long way since the early days of characters drawn in tight close ups with limited actions. Since then it has blossomed into something much more sophisticated, engaging, and creative.

There are several different types of animatronics used in feature length cartoons including puppetry, marionettes, stop motion, claymation, and computer generated imagery (CGI). All use very different techniques but they all have one thing in common - you will never see any bones!

Definition of film

In 1908, Paul Freutel invented Cinematography, which uses moving glass plates to project pictures onto a screen. He was not allowed to call his new technology "films" because he wanted to include the word "movie".

It took another ten years for someone to combine cinema projection with actual filming. William Kennedy Dickson patented Kinetoscopes in 1907; they used two discs that rotated at different speeds to create movement. In 1916, George Melies produced the world's very first feature length (one hour or longer) cartoon called Voyage au Congo. It consisted of five short films linked together by editing!

Feature-length cartoons did not become popular until the 1920s when Walt Disney revolutionized the industry. His Mickey Mouse character and stories have gone on to be one of the biggest success factors in filmmaking today. Since then, many more companies have made their own hit animations such as Toy Story, Finding Nemo and The Lion King among others.

This is because most of these early cartoons were designed to be seen by as many people as possible, which means keeping up the energy level needed to animate the movie was more important than giving your audience eye contact or interesting facial expressions.

These types of animations are sometimes called ‘cartoon actions�’ due to their emphasis on activity. They’re also referred to as action cartoons, activity cartoons, or just plain ol’ cartooning.

The 80s animation boom

During the 1980s, several studios exploded in popularity and success. Companies such as Warner Bros., Disney, Sony, Nickelodeon, and Pixar would go onto to become some of the biggest film producers around.

Many of these companies were founded during this era, making it even more impressive! Some of these brands have continued to succeed into the present day, while others have since been rebranded or completely shut down!

Overall though, this period is considered to be an explosion for animated cinema. Many people credit this growth of interest in animé to things like MTV, which heavily featured cartoons and cartoon characters.

And now, many people consider themselves fans of anime due to this growing influence. People will typically refer to something from this time frame as being “animated” or “cartoon-like”.

This includes things like Japanese manga comics, kawaii (Japanese cutesy) fashion, and video games that feature character designs or settings inspired by anime.

The 90s animation boom

During the 1990’s, big studios such as Disney and Warner Bros. were producing block-buster films that made lots of money. These movies featured vibrant colors, complex storylines, and large casts of characters. They also featured incredible special effects and flashy camera angles.

This style is what people refer to as “animation.” It's characterized by exaggerated movements, expressions, and sounds.

Special effect animators use these techniques in creating scenes with water, fire, electricity, or other things that can't be done by normal filming methods.

The most well known example of this was when Spiderman swung onto the rooftop using his glider powers. This wasn't done through practical means, but with computer graphics!

Many moviegoers today have never seen any other kind of filmmaking, making it hard for them to understand why so many cartoons look like they could not be done professionally.

However, you don't need to experience mainstream media to know good storytelling - you just need to watch some cartoons!

There are several types of animated film, and most fall under one genre or another (cartoon, action, comedy, etc.). But none of that really matters unless you can tell which ones are worth watching and which ones should be left alone.
