How Spell Cinematography

Addison Smith

As we already discussed, cinematographic style is very much dependent upon your filming technique. This includes things like shutter speed, lense type, ratio, angle, rhythm, and focus of the shot.

All these factors play an integral part in how the audience perceives the film’s narrative. By having different types of shots, you create a sense of flow, momentum, and tension. It also gives the movie more depth as viewers can relate to or understand parts differently depending on what kind of shot they have seen before.

There are several ways to achieve this spell-film style, but none compare to using handheld photography! When done correctly, it creates a feeling of unpredictability, which most people enjoy. Plus, it looks cool!

This article will go into detail about some of the reasons why handheld photography is such an effective tool for creating spell-films.

History of spell cinematography

Before there were professional camera operators, directors had to do everything themselves! They would direct their own scenes, handle all lighting, and create special effects using trick photography or simple props and models.

Some of these tricks include: flashing lights, passing cars with windows painted black, adding hats and glasses as coverings for shadows, and using silhouettes or total darkness to add intensity to an element in the scene.

Special effect artists used various methods to simulate rain, snow, explosions, etc. By incorporating these into a film, it was able to represent the weather more accurately and without having to use actual rainfall or storms.

This is called ‘spell filming’ because you use your imagination to give the appearance of something else. A lot of popular movies that have involved flashy stunts or battles contain lots of spells filmed very closely so they can be seen clearly. This way, people will believe what the movie is trying to convey even if they don’t know how those things are done in reality.

These types of shots became much easier with the introduction of auto-focus cameras.

Equipment needed for spell cinematography

A lot of people do not realize how much equipment you need to effectively do spell photography. There are several pieces that must be in place before you can start filming spells or doing other types of cinematic shots.

You will need at least two lights, one being a key light. The key light is used to illuminate your subject and create shadows. This is usually done with a large source of light like a studio lamp or flash unit.

The second light is an auxiliary light which is typically placed lower than the first light so it does not completely wash out the main light. This light is used to reduce contrast or add some soft focus to the image. A common use for this is having both lights be sun rays coming from the same direction.

After these two lights, there should be at least three more sources of lighting. These include ambient light, reflectors, and gels. An example of each would be an overhead camera angle, a white paper plate as a reflective background, and thin gel filters to tone down the brightness of the lights.

There is no wrong number of lights needed to do spell photography, but the more lights you have the better.

Know your clients

As mentioned before, cinematographers are paid very well because of their artistic talent and knowledge of filming techniques. But beyond that, there is another reason why they make such good money-they know their client(s)!

As a filmmaker, you will spend most of your time out of camera taking breaks, going to lunch or getting coffee, and then coming back to work. These times are spent talking with your colleagues, other departments (like production), and sometimes even your manager about what you’re working on at the moment as well as future projects.

This is important not only because it keeps you in touch with others around you, but also because these conversations can help you hone your craft.

You learn something new every day so don't hesitate to ask for tips or share yours if you've got them. Also, meeting people outside of work helps keep you motivated since you're sharing an experience that both you and they are part of.
