How They Make Animated Movies
There are several different ways that movie studios produce animated feature films. Some of these methods include storyboarding, filming in 2D or 3D, adding CGI effects, and others. Each one of these stages is very important to ensure that the film comes together beautifully!
Intermediate: Here we’ll talk about how directors work with writers to come up with the script. This will also include some information about rewrites and re-tooling of the script.
Final: We’ll discuss what it takes to animate a scene. This includes choosing your style, finding artists, tracking deadlines, and more.
This article will go into detail about all three of those things but there is no need to read all three parts before moving on to the next. You can easily navigate through any part by using the links at the bottom of the page.
Artistic aspects

A lot of people may know that animated movies have to start with a script, but few realize what comes next! The artists begin creating storyboards, which are like very short stories or sketches. These tell a fluid tale by using pictures to show how an event in the movie should look.
The artist will typically use a computer program to draw their animations. Programs such as Adobe Flash can be used to create most things animation related.
Once all the drawings are done, then they are put together into scenes. There are many ways to do this, but the easiest way is with the help of software called Framer. This tool allows you to connect different frames together into one continuous piece.
After this, the animator will take these scenes and add music to them. Then, these scenes are organized into episodes. Each episode is usually around a half-hour long, so there is a lot of editing needed to get it down to that length.
Visual style

In making an animated movie, one of the most important things to have is a strong visual style. A director will use their artistic skills to convey what characters look like, how they dress, what environments they are in, and even some special touches such as hairstyles or jewelry.
A lot of people may not be able to tell which scenes are animated and which ones aren’t, but there are many ways that you can make this very obvious.
For example, every time something big happens, there will be lots of sounds and explosions, the camera will get bigger, and everything will seem more intense.
These effects would not work if the scene was not fully filmed, so we must check whether these things were done in animation or not!
If you ever see a small moment where nothing seems really animated, then probably should be because it was not well-animated. :p
Another way to identify animateness is by the speed at which things happen. If something does not feel natural or quick, then probably should be because it took too long to animate.
Animation software

There are many ways to make an animated movie, but almost all of them start with animation software. Software that creates individual frames or pictures for you to add to a story is necessary to create animations!
Most people use Photoshop to design their images before they get started writing stories in films. This way they can add in some special effects like waves, globs, or even characters if needed.
There are several different types of software used for creating movies. Some are more budget-friendly while others have advanced features that cost money to use.
Drawing and painting

For most animated movies, storyboarding is done first. A writer will work with artists to come up with a concept or scene that they want to film. After this, the artist will research how to draw their characters convincingly and then put those drawings into a movie script.
The next step is for an animator to inelaborate these drawn images onto a computer program that can make it run like real life. This software is called an animation tool or drawing engine. The animators must test out their settings and techniques on this software so that they are sure everything works properly before filming.
After this, the animators must search for ways to blend the different layers of the image together seamlessly. These layer blending modes and programs vary depending on which type of animation you look at.
Digital painting

A very popular way to make animated movies is digital painting. Artists use computer software or tools to create textures, environments, and scenes for your movie.
Typically, artists start with a still image or picture as their canvas. Then they apply different textures to the surface to give it its look. These could be natural textures like wood or grass, or more abstract designs such as patterns or stripes.
The next step is to develop a style that will match the genre of the film. For example, if the movie is set in the desert then you would need to add lots of sand texture images. If the scene has water then there are many cool effects you can find online and purchase new textures that people have made.
After that, the artist adds characters to the frame. People are not free-floating shapes, so they must be designed and modeled before being imported into the animation program.
Once all these components are completed, the artist layers them together using special programs. Programs that are able to blend one layer’s content over another are the most efficient way to work because you do not have to re-draw everything every time something changes (like when an object moves out of the frame).
These types of programs are also helpful in creating animate elements. For instance, if someone were to draw a mustache onto your character's face then this element can now be programmed to grow and shrink.
Keyframing

A key frame is any short segment of an animated movie that contains important information. For example, in Anastasia, the first scene ends with Anna walking away from the window she was looking out of. The next shot shows her turning around to look at it again, so we know something happened during those two seconds.
The only difference here is that instead of having nothing for one second, there’s another person walking into the room. This adds more depth to the story by showing us who this new person is and what they are doing. It also gives you some time to focus on the other person since there’s no longer a void of white space before they enter the screen.
There are three types of keyframes used in animation: normal, reverse, and floating. In a normal keyframe, as I mentioned earlier, there’s a brief moment where both parts exist before being joined together. A reverse keyframe has the opposite effect; there’s a continuous section until a break happens.
Matte painting

For most animated features, the starting point is usually an image or collection of images that contain the main characters or settings. The artists then take these pieces and blend them together to make the movie!
This process is called matte painting. Artists use painted textures or photographs as a base for the new scene. By layering this new texture onto the existing one, it becomes part of the surface.
Matte paintings are very expensive due to the time it takes to do them properly. Because of this, only big studios can afford them. But if you want to see some incredible work done by professional artists, there are many sites with free tutorials online. You could also try your hand at doing some yourself!
There are several types of mattes including reflective, airbrushed, and solid. A common type is the reflective or glassy-eyed level where the artist paints normal-looking skin and then layers up a white paint layer over it to make it look like they have eye makeup on.
