Creating animated short films is an exciting project that allows you to showcase your artistic talent while producing a fun piece of entertainment! There are many ways to learn how to animate, so choosing which one(s) to pursue depends on what level of animator you want to be.

You can choose between learning traditional drawing, 2D animation or 3D modelling before moving onto something more complex like 2D animation. Some artists start with computer graphics (3D) then move onto 2D or the other way around. No matter what path you pick, there are several free and paid resources available online and through YouTube to help you along the way.

There are also plenty of companies that offer professional quality courses for a price, some even offering student discounts. Finding inspiration and guidance from professionals is another way to hone your skills as an artist. By creating your own content, you will definitely improve your skill set.

Below we will go over some tips on how to begin animating your own creative projects.

Write your script

Writing is the most fundamental part of creating animated films. A writer writes down what they want their film to be about, creates a storyline, and then develops the characters for that movie.

After writing your screenplay, it’s time to start developing your story. You will need to come up with some sort of theme or topic for your movie!

Your main character must have something important to achieve in this movie, and there should be at least one major event that happens during the course of the narrative. All these things play an essential role in making your movie interesting.

When it comes to animating your short film, you will also need to think about how many shots you need. There are always certain types of shots needed in any type of animation (for example, every cartoon needs at least one face shot).

But before you can even begin drawing those faces, you will first need to decide where to place the camera. This is another way to make your film unique.

Choose your cast

There are many ways to begin animating! Depending on what kind of film you want to make, there’s an animation style for that! For example, if you want to create a narrative movie-style story, then using stop motion is the way to go.

Alternatively, if you would like to learn how to animate in more action or adventure styles, then choosing a script with lots of dialogue can help you get started faster.

Whatever genre you choose, it’s important to find people who will be able to contribute their time and effort to ensure the finished project looks professional and consistent. This could mean offering payment per hour or as part of a larger team so everyone gets paid equally.

It also means finding out about any health benefits they may enjoy from donating blood, saliva, or other bodily fluids to help keep them healthy.

Produce your film

After you have gathered all of your resources, it is time to start producing your movie! There are several ways to do this, but most people begin with Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Indesign.

These programs can be expensive, so what I recommend is instead use free software such as GIMP (Google Images) or InDesign’s mobile app.

By doing this you will still get good quality videos that look professional, just not as professionally as using paid software.

The next step in production is choosing a camera position. This will determine how the video looks and if it fits the genre. For example, if the video has a story then the viewer must feel involved.

A static camera view does not attract attention which may distract the audience. If the video is more about action then a handheld shot or even self-produced footage can work well.

After filming, it is important to edit your movie! Take your time to fix any mistakes before recording the next part.

Plan out your edit

After creating a story, setting up the scene, and writing or filming your first few shots, you’ll need to start planning your next shot. This is an important step as it sets up what will happen next in the film!

The second most difficult part of animating a short movie is editing. There are many ways to do this, but one of the best tricks is using a template. A good template has different sections that can be easily modified depending on the needed changes for the project.

For example, if the main character does not feel very strong, then a section about self-confidence can be added into the script. If their personality does not change, then a new paragraph or even a new line can be used to emphasize who they are.

Now that you have a script, you can start looking into buying some of the key pieces needed to film your movie. This includes all your gear such as cameras, lights, gels, filters, etc.
