How To Become An Actor In Hollywood
As with any other profession, being an actor is not easy. It requires you to be very passionate about acting to even try your hand at it as a career choice.
Your success as an actor depends heavily on how hard you work at it and how invested you are in the art of acting.
There are many ways to become an actor, but most people start by trying to get into acting classes or storytelling workshops to learn more about the craft. While this is a great way to gain knowledge, you will have a much harder time getting exposed to actors if there was already a large pool of applicants for the position.
The next step that most aspiring actors take is seeking professional opportunities through agencies, performing in front of small groups of people or filming short segments of scenes. This is definitely a good approach if you are just starting out because you do not need too big of a platform before you can join the industry.
But unfortunately, not everyone makes it in the entertainment business. A lot of reasons exist why some people are not able to break into the field they want to be part of. Having a job may keep them stable, but it cannot help their artistic growth as professionals.
Some things that can hurt your chances of becoming an actor include working for free, refusing employment opportunities, or lacking motivation to pursue a career in the arts.
Practice filming and editing

A rising actor does not necessarily start with trying to be featured in a movie, they begin by practicing shooting and editing videos you create yourself!
Many aspiring actors try to use professional made-up faces and costumes but that is definitely not the way to go if you want your career to take off.
You do not need expensive makeup or wardrobe to look like a pro, it is all about creating natural looking scenes and settings using products we have access to at home.
Practice taking casual photos in your own backyard or anywhere else around your community, then edit them later so they seem more polished!
On YouTube, there are many people who have started their careers as an actor by posting frequently updated self-made movies or trailers for themselves or others.
Create a good acting routine

A lot of actors get into trouble early on is trying to make too many changes to how they prepare for a role. It’s important to find what works for you and stick with it!
For me, my morning ritual has always been the same. Since I started doing this, I have received several award nominations and two Emmy Awards.
I start by washing my face and putting some extra effort into making sure my hair is done properly. Then, I dress in my favorite sweats or yoga pants and either put on a t-shirt or pull up my sweater. For a movie scene, I will usually keep my shoes clean so I can change them out later.
After all that, I hop in the car and head to the studio where I work. My assistant comes along sometimes to help me with things so she can learn something as well. We both try to be very self-consciously casual and relaxed while we are working, which makes us feel more natural.
Find an agent

Now that you have your acting bug, it is time to find yourself an agent! This person will help you get work as an actor by representing you as an artist. They look for opportunities to position you as a professional performer so they can reap the benefits of being part of the industry.
Agents are not only a source of employment for actors, but also career consultants who help you develop your craft as a performing artist.
They talk with directors, producers, casting agents, and other professionals to ensure you are aware of all available roles and positions. Agents also keep track of these conversations to make sure you are well prepared and know what jobs are coming up next.
Agents typically receive a monthly or annual fee per signed client. However, most pay more at special events like when job openings come up or if their clients are hired for a big production.
Some agencies require a retainer per member which means there is no initial payment unless someone gets hired, then half of the agent’s commission goes into their bank account until the contract expires. Both types of agents depend on commissions to survive.
Apply for jobs

The next step to becoming an actor is applying for as many acting opportunities as possible! If you are reading this article, then you have already started with the first part of becoming an actor by looking into your craft and figure out how to best improve it.
Now that you know the basics of auditioning and getting cast in a play or film, it’s time to get busy and apply all those skills to succeed!
There are two main ways to approach finding acting work: through agent representation or directly via agency auditions or open calls.
By representing yourself as an artist, you eliminate the middle man (and their take) by going direct to the source. By doing so, however, you will be responsible for gathering as much material as possible to put together a solid application and meeting with potential employers.
Agents exist at a higher level than individuals seeking employment, which means they spend more time preparing applications, responding to emails and phone messages, and keeping track of what projects an applicant might be working on.
Prepare for auditions

After you have determined that becoming an actor is your dream, then the next step is to prepare for your first audition! While some people have natural talent as actors, most do not.
Acting is a skill that takes practice, repetition, and training. What this means is that before going into an audition there must be a lot of acting rehearsed or practiced. This can mean practicing your character’s traits and behaviors ahead of time, practicing your lines many times, and learning how to use appropriate body language.
Practicing acting comes from repeated exposure to the craft. The more you expose yourself to acting, the better you will become. There are several ways to learn about acting including formal education at universities, taking classes with professionals, reading books and articles related to the art form, and by watching movies and TV shows.
Be consistent

Consistency is one of the most important qualities to have as an aspiring actor. Whether you are seeking employment or trying to build your portfolio, being consistently present is key.
It’s like that old saying about people who never made an effort before - nothing ever happened. You have to put yourself out there by asking for things and putting energy into it to get anything accomplished.
If you want to be part of the film industry, you need to believe in yourself and be willing to go after what you want. That might mean talking to someone at a party about how great your career could potentially be, going up to a top producer to ask if they can help you gain experience, or sending out several audition tapes.
Whatever you do, don’t half-ass it! A lot of actors spend months preparing their look, knowing exactly what color shirt they will wear, but then leave out all the details when doing their hair and makeup. If you invest time in one area, make sure you don’t slack off elsewhere.
A good way to ensure this is done is to hire professionals to take care of it for you. Many places offer free consultations to see whether you would benefit from such services.
Develop your brand
A person’s career as an actor is never truly finished, it is always evolving. As we know, acting is a craft that requires you to constantly be investing time into developing yourself as an artist. This means working on your body and face, practicing different modes of expression, and exploring various types of personalities.
Acting is a skill that can easily be learned by most people, but not everyone has what it takes to succeed. It will take hard work and dedication from you if you want to make this your career.
You must believe in yourself and have confidence in your abilities before other people will trust you with larger roles. Becoming known within the acting community is a great way to gain that initial trust.
By being active on social media sites like Instagram and Twitter, starting or joining a performing arts group, and attending conventions and events, you are letting others know who you are and what kind of material you look at. Your online presence matters!
Conventions are a good way to meet actors and directors in the field. Most big conventions offer beginner classes so you can get some tips while also meeting other aspiring artists.
Be realistic

As we already mentioned, being an actor is not easy. It takes a lot of work and energy to pursue your dreams of becoming a famous person. If you are only planning on it as a career option, then do not necessarily invest all of your money into acting classes or equipment.
If you want to truly make this your career, then you have to understand that most people who become popular later in life did not start out trying to be famous. They worked hard in other fields before investing in their dream job.
The same goes for successful actors. Most of them did not get here overnight! They spent years learning their craft first. You should too!
Try working as an extra in movies or TV shows to gain experience if possible. This can also help you find employment with a production company or film crew.
