How To Do Hollywood Curls

Addison Smith

As we all know, hairdressers often get paid for their services by how well they do each other’s hair. This is particularly true of people with very specific looks that are difficult to replicate, like an artist might need to experiment with lots of different colors and styles to achieve perfection.

But what if I told you that there was a way to win more jobs as a professional hairstylist?

What if I also said it could be done at no cost or even with little investment?

I would say that you should try it out.

Hollywood curls are one of the most popular hairstyles in the world right now. They can easily be replicated at home!

Many famous celebrities have flaunted their own versions of this style in magazines and social media. It seems that everyone wants to look like them. Why not you?!

In this article, I will go into detail about how to create your own curly hairstyle using only two products: curling cream and straightening gel. Then, I will talk some pros and cons of both brands before giving my final verdict.

Use a heat protectant

One of the biggest things that can cause havoc with your curls is using too much roll-drying spray or gel. These products are usually marketed as helping to lock in moisture, but some contain enough alcohol or other chemicals that they actually dry out the hair!

Many people begin experimenting with roll-dry sprays at the beginning of curl days, which is why so many hairdressers have a crayon style color in their hands! As you probably know by now though, not all hairs are the same, and what works for one person’s hair may not work for yours!

There are several ways to avoid this, however. First, make sure to use a light hand when applying the product. Too heavy an application could strip away the natural oils needed to keep the strands soft and smooth. Secondly, try rolling up the hair as soon as possible after washing it, before the dried chemical coating has time to set onto the scalp.

Thirdly, if you do happen to overdo it with the roll-dry spray, take some time to let those hangy bits soak into your hair and be absorbed.

Use a curl cream

As mentioned earlier, most people have natural hair curls so there are some ways to give your curls a little more bounce. One of those is using curling products!

Most people know that rollers are a great way to achieve curly hairstyles such as rolling half up into a bun or rolling all the way through the whole braid. But what many don’t realize is that you can also use gel or butter to take the place of rolls for slightly tighter curls.

A product called “curly créme” (no surprise) is usually used for this purpose. What makes it different than other similar gels/butters is that it has a higher proportion of protein which helps retain moisture.

So instead of just using melted fat to create curls, they add in keratin proteins to help strengthen the curls as well.

Use a dry shampoo

One of the most annoying things about hair is how quickly it can get dirty. From running around, using heavy hairsprays or gel products, or doing anything that involved water-the body knows what to do!

Hollywood curls are characterized by very long, thick eyelash like extensions that frame the face. These are typically glued into place with glue and powder. Unfortunately, the glue will sometimes stick in your mouth or eyes so some way to prevent this is needed.

A great way to avoid having glue in your mouth is to use a light tan powdery concealer as a quick fix for lost lashes. This will probably be removed later, but at least you won’t have to worry about it stuck in your throat!

Another way to keep your makeup from sticking to your skin is to apply a thin layer of lip balm first. Your lips will re-seal themselves as the rest of the skin dries.

Use a soft bristle brush

When trying out different hairstyling techniques, one that has become very popular is called hair curls or ombre hair curls. This technique is pretty simple to do!

You start by rolling your hair up into a nice tight bun. Then you take one section of hair and pull it over an empty area of the roll as level as possible before pinning it in place.

Then you work down each curl with a comb or curling iron starting at the roots and working all the way through until you reach the tip. Once there are only small amounts of curls left, let go and repeat for other sections of the braid.

After doing this several times, cut off any remaining pieces and you have beautiful ombre haired locks!

Using a soft bristled brush, pick apart each part of the hair to give more defined curls.

Bring down your hair's volume

The first step in having beautiful, fluffier curls is deciding how low you want your curl level to be. Most people begin curling their hair at this volume which is very smooth!

This isn't necessarily a bad thing but only limited to certain types of hairstyles. For example, one cannot wear curly hair with a bun or roll as it would look fake and stiff.

To achieve soft, fluffy curls, we recommend experimenting with less dense rolls and buns until you find one that works for you. Then, lower the endcap size of the roller or brush slightly so that the inner layer is thinner, creating more space for hairs to grow through.

From there, work from up towards the roots to create softer, lighter curls. Don’t worry too much about how many layers each curl has though, those are just cosmetic.

Use a stretchy headband

The most difficult part of achieving beautiful, long curls is keeping them in place! Because hair is so heavy, it can become tiring holding up your hairstyle as you run around or work.

That’s why there are many ways to hold onto that gorgeous curl. One of my favorite ways to do this is with a headband.

Ahead-of-the-trending-style headband is one where you pull it over your forehead and then gather some pieces together at the back. Then, those gathered pieces are extended down the sides and tied into a knot behind your ear.

This gives you two parts to manipulate - the front and back of the band. You can play with how much poppier or tighter the headband is depending on what looks best for your style and personal taste.

For more classic styles, I would suggest using a slightly heavier headband than something thinner. This way, the weight of the curls will be balanced out by the extra material.

Apply heat

When washing your hair, use a good amount of conditioner and pull it through each part starting from the roots all the way up until you reach the middle of the scalp. Then, using a very small amount of warm water, work in some heated rollers or curling irons depending on what kind of curls you want!

Heat is an integral part of creating beautiful curly hairstyles. Heated rollers will help create tighter, shorter curls while curling irons will give longer, looser curls!

Remember, as you curl your hair, sections can get too hot so make sure to monitor them! The best way to do this is by either wearing earrings or having natural features (like skin) that show otherwise.

Use a small barrel curling curling wand

While many people use very large barrels that are difficult to hold, or have to pull out extra products due to there not being enough space, this is not necessary!

There are now companies making short, easy to use wands that can create beautiful curls. These wands are also much more cost effective as you do not need to purchase larger ones later!

Many people begin using these wands when they learn how to do hair-styling techniques such as rolling/pinning curls, bantu knots, and spiral twists.
