How To Get A Career On TV
Becoming a TV/ media career has come a long way since the advent of the 1990s. With television shows having access to longer seasons and the internet making it easy to find sources of information, the career options have changed drastically.
Not only are there lots of ways to make money, it's also fun! Below is a look at the very best ways to earn a career on TV.
Become a reality TV star:
Let's start with the obvious option: becoming a reality TV star.
Some of the most well-known reality TV stars are those of the so-called "competition" shows such as American Idol, America's Next Top Model and The Voice.
Since their creation, these shows have been the main avenue to making a career on TV. Some examples include Miss Venezuela 2003, Nastassia Yaramchuk; Miss Universe 2007, Zuleyka Rivera; and Miss Bolivia 2006, Maria Jose Alvarado.
These shows have been enormously successful in Brazil where there's been a constant stream of soap opera television.
Besides these, there are lots of other reality TV shows and, like in reality TV, the shows vary in quality and creativity.
Examples of a good, short, Brazilian soap opera would be Floribella: A Vida do Personagem. It's also worth noting that there are tons of other international soap operas (there are a total of 73 in Brazil).
Networking :
A lot of people don't know this, but networking is actually an important part of being on TV/ media. Networks are groups of people in one place who know a whole lot about what you do and can help you make connections.
The best networks can provide all of the following:
- Financing
- Theft protection
- Corporate direction
- Business strategy
- Partnering
Auditions :

Auditions and casting calls are a great way to have your stuff seen and find an agent to represent you. Although most people know that auditioning can be risky, it's really a great way to increase your chances of getting a TV gig.
Some notable shows in the US that cast auditions include RuPaul's Drag Race, Project Runway, America's Next Top Model, and Project Fame West Africa.
Real-Life challenges :
While it may seem odd, a lot of shows require that their casts do some kind of real-life challenge. What are they looking for in these challenges? Competition, drama, and excitement.
This kind of aspect can make a cast or a show seem more real. I'll give you an example. Todrick Hall's talent show came up with the idea of making a music video with ten different people in it.
The winner would be Todrick's opening act for his tour. The idea was outrageous and it worked.
Become a script writer :
Doing things hands-on, such as writing, editing, and/or producing a show, can help you find a job in TV/ media.
An example would be entering contests such as the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences' Scriptapalooza competition.
Learn about the business:
Since many of these shows take place in or around business, understanding the field is important. These shows and shows like them can teach you a lot about what goes on behind the scenes in the industry.
The easiest way to learn is to read a few books or watch a few informative documentaries. Below is a list of books that are great for studying the business aspect of TV/ media.
