How To Get A Degree In Cinematography

As we already mentioned, cinematographers are very talented artists that work with light and space to tell stories through filming. They are also professionals who have a lot of skills such as camera operation, lighting, color correction, sound design, and even editing!

Having a degree or certification in cinema is great way to show off your talent and knowledge of the art form. It can help you land more jobs in the field, and it’s always helpful to have professional validation for what you know.

There are many ways to get this certificate though. Here at The School of Film, our Master of Cinema Arts (MCA) program is one option. We offer both part-time and full-time courses, so you can choose which fits into your schedule best.

Invest in equipment

As we mentioned before, starting out as a cinematographer is very expensive! If you are able to afford it, then owning at least one of each piece of gear is your next step.

A camera body, or what people commonly refer to as a lens, starts off with you for about 1,000-1,500 dollars. After that, lenses start around 2,000 more per piece.

Then there are light heads (also referred to as lighting kits) which can cost anywhere from 5,000 to 15,000 dollars depending on the features they have like hot shoes or cold shoes. Lights also add up quickly so be sure to research different types ahead of time to determine which ones are needed for what kind of filming.

And lastly, cables and accessories such as power strips and surge protectors can run you quite a bit too.

Find a filming location

Finding your dream career is mostly about knowing what jobs exist, where those jobs are needed, and how to get them! If you’re passionate about film production, then starting with TV or web series is a great way to hone your craft. These mediums can be more casual, so they may not require a degree, but it is always helpful to have a bachelor’s level understanding of media production.

Alternatively, if you’re already working in the industry, try and find an open position that fits your skillset. A lot of companies will offer informal training as well as opportunities for advancement, which would be good sources of knowledge. Both of these options help you grow your portfolio.

There are many ways to learn about the movie business beyond just studying cinematography. For example, marketing, editing, sound design, and producing are all integral parts of filmmaking.

Learn to use your camera equipment

One of the most important things about taking pictures is knowing how to work with all three main pieces of photography gear: lens, body, and computer.

You must be familiar with at least one of these before you can start trying out different styles and genres.

There are many ways to learn more about each of these, either through YouTube videos or by reading beginner’s level books.

But what if you want to go beyond that? What if you wanted to take your knowledge to the next level?

Practice filming

A lot of people start working as cinematographers by doing photoshoots or promotional videos for brands. While creating photos or videos with decorations, natural light, and/or creative camera angles is very important, not all professionals begin their careers that way!

Most aspiring cinematographers learn how to use a camera first by shooting some regular footage (re-enacting everyday situations like having a conversation with a person) and then editing it together!

By taking time to edit your shots and create beautiful compositions, you will develop your talent more than just making pretty pictures. This article will talk about some easy ways to start practicing your craft as a filmmaker!

There are many ways to teach yourself to film. You do not need any special equipment to get started except for an old smartphone which does not have too advanced features. There are several free software programs that can help you make your own films easily. Some of these software packages have built in courses and tutorials to get you up to speed quickly on the basics of filmmaking.

Try making videos

A few basic courses in cinematography are enough if you want to get into the field as a professional photographer or filmmaker. Starting your career as a cinematographer can be tricky, however!

Most experienced filmmakers and cinematographers have online tutorials, Vlogs (you may call them YouTube channels!), or free lessons from various resources. These could include how to use specific camera equipment, editing software, or general filmmaking tips and tricks.

Alternatively, there are many free events where you can show off your filming skills or attend a conference for cinephiles to see what techniques they use. Many universities also offer credit-transferring courses that do not require paying tuition again.

If you’re already familiar with Photoshop then studying graphic design is another way to advance your career.

Connect with an expert in cinematography

One of the most important things for anyone aspiring to become a professional cameraman is connecting with other professionals in the field. By being part of the right camera clubs or film societies, you can meet people with similar interests as yours.

By attending events, filming sessions and movie premieres, you will get a lot of exposure which could eventually lead to employment opportunities.

It’s also a good way to make friends who share your passion for cinema!

There are many ways to connect with like-minded individuals including filming competitions, free screenings and talk shows where passionate filmmakers discuss their craft.

Take advantage of classes

One of the best ways to get your degree is by taking as many courses as you can while attending school. Most colleges offer at least one class per department, so it’s easy to reach out and ask if there are any photography or cinematography related courses. If not, create your own!

Many schools also have student groups that hold events, such as movie screenings and/or panel discussions. Ask whether anyone is offering their services free of charge, and see what you like about them before investing time into studying with them.

By adding more courses onto your list, you’ll need to find ways to pay for them. Because tuition is expensive, most students agree that looking into scholarships and loans is an excellent way to save money.

Stay informed

After deciding on what degree to pursue, now you have to figure out if this program is worth it. You can check out each school’s website, social media pages, and student forums to get an idea of whether or not this is right for you.

There are several ways to find information about how well run a cinematographic program is. By being active on these sites, you will be able to see what people are saying about their experiences with the college and its programs.

By talking to current students and alumni, you will get a more in-depth look at the school than just browsing their site. If there are any organized events or movie screenings that they advertise, attend those!

In addition to looking into the academic side of things, make sure to do some research on the culture of the community surrounding the campus. Does it seem like a friendly place where individuals grow? Or is it full of rich kids who don’t care much about anyone else but themselves?

If there aren’t too many reviews and rumors floating around, then go ahead and apply! The chances are good that someone has done extensive research on the school and knows of great resources and opportunities available.
