How To Read Cinematography
As we already mentioned, cinematographers are very creative people that use their skills in photography as well as filmmaking to tell stories through visuals. They apply artistic talent in designing settings and filming scenes to emphasize what they want the viewer to take away from the movie.
In this article, we will talk about how to read a still photo or film clip of a scene. The first step is to identify something in the picture or movie that is important to the story. This element can be anything- an object, person, place, or event.
The second part is to determine whether the content of the shot conveys directness, ambiguity, or contradiction. Having a look at some examples will help you understand these concepts more clearly.
Once you have determined the importance of the item and its content, your next task is to infer what the artist wanted the audience to think or feel about the subject. You can do this by applying several theories and tips such as describable image theory, parallel lines, and proportion.
Watch movies

Watching films is one of the most effective ways to learn how to read cinematographic language. There are many types of films, so there is no need to watch all drama or comedy films!
Films can tell you a lot about reading literature and the way writers use vocabulary and metaphors in stories. They also teach you about color theory (the science of colors) and how to apply those theories to your own style.
There are several reasons why watching movies is an excellent method for learning about film literacy. First, every movie has both dialogue and imagery, and you can choose which one you want to focus on.
Second, not only do individual scenes contain enough information, but each scene contributes to the overall theme and narrative of the film as well.
Third, by comparing different versions of a shot or sequence of shots, you will be able to see what effect they wanted to achieve and learn from that.
Become familiar with different lighting setups

A nice, natural light source is very common in cinematic photography. When there is no appropriate or possible way to use direct sunlight as a light source, filming under cloudy skies or at night are your next best options.
When shooting during these times, filmmakers typically use additional lights to create soft, believable illumination. These lights can be an external battery powered lamp that they carry around, or them using reflective materials such as white paper or aluminum to bounce the light back from the subject.
These types of ambient light sources are used to reduce the intensity of any other available light, creating a softer, more relaxed look. The trick is to find ways to incorporate this into your own style while keeping it professional and adhering to the genre!
There are many styles of cinematographic lighting, so becoming familiar with each one is another way to expand your repertoire.
Learn about different camera movements

Aperture is another important setting used for photography. An aperture is the hole in the lens where light enters the camera. There are many types of apertures, but some generalizations can be made. Wide-angle lenses have wider apertures than normal or long distance lenses, for example.
A wide angle lens has a very large amount of real estate that it covers, which means more content can be included in the frame. This could be someone lying down next to each other, or an entire room with lots of things happening. As you may have noticed, we tend to include more content when using wide angles!
By having a larger area that includes everything, there is an emphasis placed on depth. In contrast, longer telephoto (or close up) lenses have tighter apertures, only including what is directly ahead of the camera. This creates a sharper focus and higher intensity of activity, making it ideal for capturing action.
There are two main reasons why professionals use both wide and long focal lengths simultaneously. The first is artistic expression - they choose how to compose the image by choosing one over the other. The second is practicality - depending on your context, either option will work well.
Camera movement is another way to create interesting images. Different styles contain unique moving parts that add effect to the picture. These moves can be stills or videos, and are usually done rapidly or smoothly.
Become familiar with different types of shots

There are three main shot types that most cinematographers use in storytelling. These are usually referred to as action, dialogue, and narrative or story-telling shots.
Action shots occur when something is happening or someone is doing something significant. For example, an actor might be running through a field or skydiving off a plane.
These are typically fast moving scenes with lots of energy. The camera often does not stop shooting until after the event has ended.
A good action scene will have a very dramatic feel due to the intensity of the moment but also the length of time it takes to pull off.
Dialogue or conversation shots happen when two people talk for a few minutes. This could be between individuals or even one individual talking to themselves.
This is usually done to create some sort of context or reveal information about the character or situation.
Nostalgia stories are made up of lots of dialogue scenery. A lot of films get their title via a large amount of dialogues.
Learn how to read actors

A lot of people get film theory very wrong by thinking that studying camera angles, light sources, and so forth is reading as done before online courses became popular. Learning about photography is great, but there’s another way to apply this knowledge in the field of cinema.
The first step towards understanding acting is learning how to read actors. This applies not only to those who want to be professionals, but also to anyone wanting to understand character communication better.
Reading an actor can mean different things depending on what kind of movie they are in. For example, someone playing a villain might use facial expressions and body language to convey their malicious intentions. On the other hand, an audience may learn more about a person from their voice than anything else.
There are several ways to improve your ability to interpret actors’ actions and vocal tones. You do not need to know every tool in the toolbox to work with actors, but it will help you communicate more effectively.
This article will go into detail on five easy strategies to read actors.
Look for patterns in filming

A good way to read cinematography is by looking at how the camera is used to create rhythm or pattern. For example, when watching action scenes, you can notice that there are always at least two points where the shot breaks down into close up positions with lots of movement.
These shots usually contain very little content because the audience has already seen this information before (or it is just not important to the story). The overall effect though is dramatic as everything pauses while the subject looks intense and focused.
Another way to identify a strong pattern in photography is using a wide-angle lens. A wide angle makes things look large and fuzzy, creating an airy feel. Try experimenting with your own pictures to see what types of patterns you can find!

Pay attention to details

As we've discussed before, cinematographers spend a lot of time thinking about how light impacts the frame in their own styles and techniques. They also devote lots of time studying other people's work to learn new tricks.
But aside from learning these concepts for natural lighting, creating atmospheric images, or using special effects like flares, most professional photographers start by paying close attention to the small things.
These include anything from the position of the sun during dawn breaks to the shape and size of windows and furniture in a room to determine where shadows will fall.
All of this is important because it adds depth to the image and helps tell the story. It is our subconscious mind that processes what we see so having some interesting eye-catching patterns, textures, and shapes can really influence the way you read your photographs.
There are many ways to do this but one of my favorites is to take several pictures around a house or apartment and then organize them into groups according to color.
Ask experts for guidance

As with any form of art, there are many ways to approach cinematography. What works for one person may not work for you or your style. There are several routes people take when pursuing their passion for film photography.
Some hone their skills by studying stills, videos, and/or masters like David Fincher, Stanley Kubrick, etc. Others learn about lighting, camera types, and filming styles. Some pick an area of filming they’d like to pursue (editing, production design, directing), while others focus more on capturing specific scenes using different techniques and media.
Whatever your artistic vision is, there are always new tools and strategies to experiment with! And don’t be afraid to try out new things; sometimes what looks complicated and expensive is just designed to make it easy for most anyone to use effectively.
