How To Start Writing A Drama Script

Addison Smith

Starting a new writing project is always a challenge, but starting with a script can be especially tricky because it requires establishing dramatic context earlier than most other types of stories.

With a screenplay, you start in the middle (or at least very close to the middle) by telling someone else’s story - their life or career. With a movie like All The President’s Men, for example, we as audience members are already familiar with Richard Nixon so when the film begins, we have to determine if his downfall was due to Watergate or something internalized and self-destructive.

But what about a book? A novel is just one person’s journey, right? Wrong!

A novel is actually two people’s journeys intertwined, which makes it more complicated than a screenwriting format where only one character exists. In fact, that’s why many novels are longer than short films!

The thing about books is that they often focus on one event after another without much relation to each other. For instance, let’s say there’s an episode where A happens and then B happens. Then C happens and all three together make D. When reading a book, you have to connect all these events together into a sequence of cause and effect, of A leading to B which leads to C which lead to D, and so forth. This process is how writers build suspense, create momentum, and advance the plot.

Develop your unique voice

A story’s tone is an integral part of what makes it interesting. Your script’s tone comes from your writing style, which includes how you use vocabulary, sentence structure, and patterns in conversation.

Your storytelling voice can be influenced by many things, but at its core, it must come from within.

No one else can write for you, and no one else can identify your writing quirks or strengths so as to copy them. Only you have access to your inner writer.

So start writing!

Begin with short stories - even if they are silly, funny, romantic, or anything other than drama. Write about something that has always fascinated you - sports, politics, science, religion…

The key is to be passionate - really invest into the topic and let yourself go. No matter what you pick, you will grow as a writer by doing it.

Once you feel comfortable, move onto longer pieces. But stay true to your first draft by using only parts of the new material.

Create a writing environment

Now that you have chosen to start writing, you will need to create a space where you can do it!

You can either use an already-existing script or write your own from scratch. Either way, make sure you have adequate resources to begin with.

We recommend keeping yourself as organized as possible by using index cards, notes, and/or documents to include important information such as story ideas, characters, and scenes.

Also, remember that writing is a creative process, so don’t feel like you have to put in all the work up front.

Always keep your work up to date

It is very tempting to put off writing because you do not feel like it. You may also get nervous when you start writing, making you even push back the start of your script.

However, this can be a bad thing to do if you want to write well.

By putting off writing for too long, you lose the opportunity to perfect your craft.

If you are ever in a slump or need some inspiration, take out your pen and notebook and just write! Do not worry about anything else at the time - just focus on writing.

When you are ready later, go back and edit what you have written. Make sure to only do this though as it will waste valuable time otherwise.

Also, make sure to always keep yourself updated with current trends in writing. This can mean reading books, listening to music, looking through magazines or watching movies.

Writing a movie screenplay is an art that requires studying other people’s styles, so stay in touch by reading their works and observing how they use language.

Connect with other writers

Now, this is not something that can be done through a general writing class or even via creative writing classes at your college or university. Rather, you need to connect with other writers in order to begin writing.

There are many ways to do this. You can join writer’s groups online or by doing it yourself. Some of these groups gather for a specific topic or genre while others have open discussions about anything related to writing.

By joining such groups, you will get feedback from people who are more experienced than you and thus can help you improve your craft. They may also give you tips and tricks for how to improve your own writing!

I recommend trying out different types of groups before investing time into one. There are some free apps and websites that can help you find like-minded people and chat rooms.

Get a mentor

As with any other type of writing, starting out as a writer means having someone you look up to help you make sure your script is solid and well-paced. Having a creative friend or family member who can review your work is very helpful in this process!

If you’re struggling to get into writing mode, there are many ways to gain some tips from an experienced writer. Find writers online via social media, read books written by authors, listen to their podcasts, and watch their videos. Some of these people will offer writing services for a fee, which is totally okay!

Writing a screenplay is like baking a cake - if you don’t use good ingredients, the finished product won’t taste right nor will it be effective. Make sure your material is strong before trying to put it together into a story. Writing a screenplay is very similar to writing a novel. The main difference being that a movie is usually much more focused, so there’s less need for subplots and other narrative devices.

That said, there are several ways to take advantage of those components when needed. When investing time in developing your screenwriting skills, look at how writers incorporated them into their scripts and apply those concepts here and now.

Find an audience

After you have written your script, it is time to find someone to read your work! You can either put it up on Amazon or create a tumblr account and share it there.

You should also try writing some short stories or novels that are similar to yours so people can get a sense of how you write and what style works for you. This way they will be able to see if they like your writing style before investing more time in reading your longer story.

If anyone enjoys what they read, then maybe we could brainstorm about ways to make your story better or learn something new from them. That would be worth your effort!

General tips: don’t worry too much about being perfect, just write what you want to say and let the chips fall where they may.
