Starting with writing is often seen as an easy way to get your feet wet when it comes to storytelling. But writing a script is not like writing a book, even if you are using stories as your source material.

Writing a movie or television screenplay is a very specific style that requires special training to achieve. There are lots of ways to learn this craft, but you can never really “learn” screenwriting in its entirety. You have to go through what has become known as the six-step process at some point. And yes, you must include all six steps for what you write to be considered a proper screenplay.

The first step in writing a script is to decide where to begin.

Make a list of topics that you think your audience would enjoy reading about

Now, pick one of these topic ideas that you have written down and start writing!

When it comes to starting to write a script, the hardest part is choosing what script you want to write.

You will probably start with something simple like “My favorite movie of all time is ____” or “I love eating _____ because of (reason).”

Then, add some detail to make your sentence more interesting - maybe tell a story about how/why you loved the food or movie. Or possibly give some tips for how to make the food or movie recipe or technique.

Once you have given your speech, then edit it to sound natural and keep it focused on the main point. You can also practice this out loud or use a voice recorder to perfect your speech.

Develop your theme for the blog post

Now that you have your main topic and bullet point, it’s time to develop your theme or argument for your script. What is the main point of your screenplay?

It can be about anything, but I suggest writing around one central idea. Your movie should already have a story, so why not use this as your starting place?

Your film’s main theme could be something like “Finding Happiness in Life By Doing Good Things” or “Living A Balanced Life”. These are very general themes, but they give you a framework to work within.

Within these topics, you can explore different concepts such as how to achieve a balanced life, ways to add happiness into your life, and what makes people feel happier.

Once your theme is developed, start thinking about how you can apply it to your own life and creative projects. If you want to become a better writer, then studying writing and screenwriting is a great way to do that.
