How To Start Writing A Script

Addison Smith

Starting with writing is often seen as an easy way to get your feet wet when it comes to storytelling. But writing a script is not like writing a book, even if you are using stories as your source material.

Writing a movie or television screenplay is a very specific style that requires special training to achieve. There are lots of ways to learn this craft, but you can never really “learn” screenwriting in its entirety. You have to go through what has become known as the six-step process at some point. And yes, you must include all six steps for what you write to be considered a proper screenplay.

The first step in writing a script is to decide where to begin.

This article will help you do just that! Read on for our tips and then try out one of these three starting points today.

Make a list of topics that you think your audience would enjoy reading about

Now, pick one of these topic ideas that you have written down and start writing!

When it comes to starting to write a script, the hardest part is choosing what script you want to write.

You will probably start with something simple like “My favorite movie of all time is ____” or “I love eating _____ because of (reason).”

Then, add some detail to make your sentence more interesting - maybe tell a story about how/why you loved the food or movie. Or possibly give some tips for how to make the food or movie recipe or technique.

Once you have given your speech, then edit it to sound natural and keep it focused on the main point. You can also practice this out loud or use a voice recorder to perfect your speech.

Develop your theme for the blog post

Now that you have your main topic and bullet point, it’s time to develop your theme or argument for your script. What is the main point of your screenplay?

It can be about anything, but I suggest writing around one central idea. Your movie should already have a story, so why not use this as your starting place?

Your film’s main theme could be something like “Finding Happiness in Life By Doing Good Things” or “Living A Balanced Life”. These are very general themes, but they give you a framework to work within.

Within these topics, you can explore different concepts such as how to achieve a balanced life, ways to add happiness into your life, and what makes people feel happier.

You get extra credit if you refer back to our initial bullet point! 😉

Once your theme is developed, start thinking about how you can apply it to your own life and creative projects. If you want to become a better writer, then studying writing and screenwriting is a great way to do that.

Writing is a universal language that anyone can pick up, which is why it is such an important skill to possess.

Write down your topic sentence to use as a starting point for your blog post

Now that you have your topic and body, it is time to start writing! The first thing to do is to write your theme or topic sentence as the main point. Your theme sentence should be one important idea that makes the reader think about how to fix a problem or learn more about a concept.

Your theme sentence can be related to the article you are writing about. Your readers will know what you talk about so they will form an opinion about whether yours is interesting or not. If you take some time to research and create a good theme sentence, then your audience will trust you more.

Brainstorm potential ending sentences for your blog post

Even though writing a script is not as easy as you might think, there’s no reason that you can’t start writing one!

Writing a script means telling someone else’s story through the use of dialogue and narrative. It’s like reading a book, except you get to choose how the characters talk and what they say instead of relying on the author to tell you what happens next.

Choose your final topic and ending sentence and write out a draft

Now that you have your main topic and closing, choose your second topic and lead to the conclusion of your script!

Start writing a novel using only bullet points! These are very efficient ways to start writing because you do not need to create paragraphs or even whole scenes until later.

By starting with a short, discrete idea, your brain can more easily process it. Also, when you use bullets, you do not have to work as hard to find the right flow or tone for each element.

This article will help you learn how to write a screenplay via this method.

Edit your draft, trying to choose words that your audience is likely to use

One of the most important steps in writing is editing! When you write an article or script, it goes through several rounds of review before it gets published or shared.

That’s not always the case for writers. Some people start with a flow and then have to go back and edit out all the fluff so it feels more direct.

But writing is an art form, which means there are many ways to approach it.

And just because someone else wrote something similar does not mean it’s bad style or boring.

Practice writing using the draft, proper grammar, and vocabulary

Between now and you finishing your script, you will be practicing in several different ways. First, you will need to learn how to write a sentence! You can start by taking some time to read through our list of common sentences as well as our lists of verbs and nouns.

Once you have learned those, it is time to practice writing a paragraph! Take some time to do this outside of class or with friends so that you feel more comfortable when we review these next week.

And lastly, if you are already familiar with the scripts of other writers, take some time to compare their rhythms, styles, and tone.

Read, edit, and repeat until you feel comfortable with the draft

Starting from scratch is always difficult. Even if you have written stories before, it can be tough getting into writing mode and creating your own story or script.

But this process is important! Hiding under a blanket and staring at the wall will not help you achieve your dreams.

So, here are some tips for starting to write a screenplay.

Reading is the first step toward becoming an author. So, grab yourself a good amount of reading material and see how much you pick up from that.

For example, most people start by reading books about writing. This could be any number of things, such as how to organize your thoughts, how to sequence events, what tools to use when editing, and more.

After that, they move on to reading short stories or novels. These can include anything from romance to thrillers to science fiction.

Once you’ve built up the necessary skills through literature, it’s time to begin writing your work.

The hardest part may be just getting started, but once you do, everything else seems to come easily. Don’t worry too much about what you put in and out, instead focus on telling a good story.
