How To Structure A Script Writing

Addison Smith

A script is any piece of writing that contains an underlying story. Scripts can be stories in themselves, such as novels or movies. They can also be scenes from a movie or a series of conversations in a television show.

Scripts are very common pieces of writing. Writers create scripts all the time, whether it’s for TV, film, or online content.

Writing a screenplay or novel is really just writing with a focus on telling your story through dialogue and setting up internal and external conflicts.

Screenwriting has its own set of rules and tricks to help you organize your ideas and narratively progress toward your climax.

There are many ways to learn screenwriting, but some of the most helpful concepts are those related to structure.

The structure is how the individual parts of a script relate to each other and what purpose they serve. For example, in my latest project, there is a three-and-a-half-minute scene where two people talk about a past event for one minute, then shift gears and discuss something different for another minute before coming back together and closing the chapter.

This type of storytelling is called circular narration or micro-arcs, and it helps bring cohesion to the whole. The reader feels connected to the characters and the storyline because they understand the flow and rhythm of the text.

Given enough practice, anyone can write a well-structured story with solid character development.

Prepare your workspace

When writing a script, you will want to make sure that you have enough space to work with. This could be in terms of physical spaces as well as mental ones like notes or reminders.

If you do not have enough room, you may end up trying to fit too much content into a small area which can easily lead to you rushing the quality of your writing or even forgetting what you were writing!

Start off by making sure you have enough desk space to write without having to scroll back and forth. Then, add an index card or note-taking app to give yourself some more breathing room.

Make sure to keep these apps private so that you do not accidentally read something you are not allowed to. That would be disastrous for your writer’s instinct!

The organization is very important when it comes to scripting.

Develop your writing style

When it comes down to it, screenwriting is an art form that requires you to develop your own unique writing style. As with any creative field, there are many great writers out there who have their own rhythm, tone, and storytelling styles that make their scripts special.

Screenwriters of all levels can learn something from the writings of these masters. If you want to write well, then look into how they did it and adopt some of those elements into yours.

For example, writing in past tense or present perfect can change the feeling of a scene or story completely. Use strong verbs to keep the flow going!

There’s no one way to do this so long as your writing makes people enjoy reading it and you're willing to experiment.

Writing is a process that takes time to get better at, so don’t feel like you need to rush through the steps because someone next to you has done them before.

Create a writing schedule

A good way to start writing is by creating a timing structure for your writing. This can be done in two ways - either by buying an app that makes it easy, or making one yourself!

The first option is to use a pre-existing script-writing tool. There are many free ones available online and some paid apps. Many have you create an account through their site to access the tools, but they are still relatively inexpensive.

The best app I’ve found thus far is called PenTool which has lots of features including time stamps, notes, and quick edits. You can connect this to almost any device so you do not need to own a computer to write. It also does not require you to pay monthly fees as some other apps do.

This article will talk about how to make our own timing structure using Google Suite. But what is a suite?

What is a Google Suite?

A google suite is an internal name for all of the products within Google. Some examples include Gmail, YouTube, and Drive. They are usually very affordable per person as well. The cost varies depending on how much you purchase, how many people you add as accounts, and how long you opt to remain a member.

I would recommend adding at least one personal account and staying that way at no extra charge until you feel comfortable paying otherwise. That way you can continue accessing the services you use now without having to re-pay later.

Know your market

A script writer needs to know their audience, what types of stories they like, and how to tell those stories in ways that appeal most to them.

As mentioned before, screenwriters are storytellers. Yours will be different from someone else’s depending on who you are as a person and what kind of stories you want to tell.

Your style should match whatever genre movie you are writing. Action films need an action scene every other line, while romantic comedies have lots of witty banter and kissing!

Knowing your market is more than just knowing which genres exist - it includes understanding the tropes for each genre.

Tropes are formulas or patterns that writers include in their scripts to make their stories more believable. For example, all science fiction uses themes such as technology advancing beyond our natural limitations, space travel, and questions about humanity.

There are many examples of this across media, so if you are struggling to come up with ideas, look through some plot concepts and see what you can add to apply these theories to another medium.

Connect with other writers and the media

A script is only as good as its individual components, so it’s important to connect with other writers and the media in your area to ensure that you are getting quality material.

There are many ways to do this. You can join writing groups or forums, attend events, contribute to projects online, follow (and leave comments on) blogs and publications related to writing, and lastly, reach out directly to people in the industry!

By being part of the writing community, you will get valuable insights and tips from others, not just about scripting, but about life too!

And don’t forget to keep yourself active by reading, listening to music or podcasts related to writing, watching films and TV shows oriented towards writing, and studying literature.

Get familiar with your audience

A script writer’s first challenge is figuring out who their audience is. You can be very creative in how you approach this, but it helps to know some basics about your target audience.

This includes things like what kind of movie they want to see, what genre movies they enjoy, what types of stories they are looking for, and if there are any themes that matter to them.

If there are, great! But make sure your scripts fit those styles or else your messages may not get through!

Your message should also be clear and concise. If your writing seems overly flowery or worded vaguely, then chances are people will have a hard time understanding what you want from them.

Make your messages easy to read and understand so people do not need to put extra effort into your texts.

Have a strong theme

As we have discussed, writing is a very creative process that requires you to be passionate about your topic. If you don’t feel inspired by what you are writing then no one will really care whether it makes sense or not!

If this sounds like you, give yourself some time to re-focus the energy on something more inspiring. It may take you weeks or months depending on how much inspiration you get, but in the end, it will pay off!

Your script could be themed around relationships, career changes, quitting things you want to do, etc.

Write every day

Now that you have found your writing passion, it is time to get serious about it! If you are struggling to write for even one minute each day, then chances are you will not see much progress in your writing career.

You should be composing written material at least short notes or paragraphs on a daily basis. Even if you only manage a few minutes per day, try to make it as efficient as possible by using the bullet point mentioned above.

Once you have done this for a while, you can start trying to improve your writing speed. This may mean investing in an app like Grammarly to check your work, or practicing with simpler texts until your flow takes over.
