How To Write A Screenplay For An Animated Film

Addison Smith

Writing a screenplay is not like writing a normal book or article, it’s more like creating a new piece of entertainment merchandise - you have A, B, and C stories that can be made into movies.

A stories are usually pretty straightforward (think The Lion King), but advanced writers add in little twists here and there to make their story more interesting. Same thing with screenplays!

Making your movie concept my own, I will try to include as many tips and tricks as possible to help you write the best script possible. But first, let us talk about what kind of film this is.

What type of animation is this?

This article will go over all types of animated films, how they work, and some basics of each. There are very few rules when it comes to writing a screenplay for an animated feature, so feel free to mix and match these tips according to whatever genre appeals to you.

General concepts:

Length: Lengthy means different things depending on which style of animation you use. For example, hand drawn animations such as Tangled take longer to produce than digital ones like Frozen where everything is done via computer.

Create a writing schedule

When you write a screenplay, you will need to have a steady work flow that includes both time to write as well as time to review your work.
As with any other creative task, it is easy to get distracted or give up when you are in the middle of writing.

If this happens, then it is very difficult to start again from scratch later. You may want to consider keeping some notes about what you wrote earlier so you can quickly come back to those once you have finished re-writing!

It is also important to be able to look at your script with clarity and without distractions. A good way to do this is to use word processing software that has specific features for screenwriters such as spacing out paragraphs and using bullets or numbers instead of sentences.

You should also be familiar with your settings within the program so you don’t accidentally delete something or make changes that take too long to fix.

Develop your story

Now that you have done some scripting, it is time to develop your screenplay! The next step in writing an animated feature film is developing your script. This means creating scenes and re-writing parts of the script to make them feel natural and fluid.

Many writers start this process by taking notes as they read through the first few pages of their script. By doing this, they are getting ideas about how to organize the script and what themes there should be.

After all, if the plot isn’t interesting, then people won’t want to watch the movie! But, don’t take too much inspiration from other scripts. Yours will influence theirs, but not exactly the same way they did things.

Your characters and storyline must stand out among others so that people will invest themselves in the story.

Outline and plan your movie

The next step in writing a script is to outline and plan your screenplay. This is done through what’s called a plot board or story map. A good way to begin this process is to make a vertical column headed by “Year” and then under that, make a horizontal row titled "Week of." Now, starting with the current year go down and create another vertical column tagged “Act.” Under that, create a second row tagged “Scene.” Once you have all four boxes completed, start moving time forward one week at a time and see where it takes you.

When setting up each scene, think about what has been established in the preceding scenes. What are the characters involved in? What actions occur? What emotions do they feel? Make sure to include enough detail to keep the flow going without too many holes. Also, remember that people don’t always say everything there is to know about someone, so be creative in how you develop their character.

Write your script

Now that you have got some of the basics down, it’s time to start writing! The first thing is to actually write your screenplay.

The hardest part about writing a movie is actually getting into the writing process. Most people get stuck because they think they need to know how to structure a story before they can begin writing one. But storytelling has always existed outside of literary studies, so there is no reason why you cannot learn this art form immediately.

By now, you should be able to create a narrative framework in your own style by thinking about events, situations and characters and linking them together. When you are ready, you can begin writing your movie!

There are many ways to do this. Some people use word documents or notes apps to type out their stories, but we will go deeper than that here. We will talk about what software is best for animators to edit and publish their movies.

Edit your script

After writing your first draft, the next step is editing! There are many ways to do this, but the most common way is to make use of what’s known as the third-party edit tool. These tools allow you to connect to the internet and access free or paid software that can help you fix all sorts of issues with the script.

Some examples of these types of edits include: The Reel Writer which allows you to upload the script and makes suggestions; Script Toolbox, which does similar things as The Reel Writer but is more interactive; and Final Draft, which is one of the most popular screenplay editors out there.

There are several reasons why using a professional grade editor is important to the success of your film. First, they have vast experience creating scripts so their input may help give yours a better structure or improve its flow. Second, some of them create their own version of the script so they know how to write fluidly and clearly. And last, many offer discounts to potential readers, making it possible to try out the service at no cost!

There are also times when someone might ask to read your work and need a clean copy without any distractions or notes. An editor will probably take care of this for you, too.

Review your movie script

After you have designed your characters, storyboarded your scenes, and written your screenplay, it’s time to review your work!
Start by printing out the final version of your screenplay using either Microsoft Word or Google Docs.

After that, go through each scene and bullet point and make notes in the following categories:

What made me feel this way about this scene? What did I like about this scene? Is there anything I can take from here to apply to my own life/writing?

Make sure to also look at the list below and see what ideas you can add to yours.

Publish your movie script
