Jennifer Hudson Show Joins Writer Strike Pause: A Talk Show Twist!

A. Prentice

"The Jennifer Hudson Show" is the latest talk show that has put its upcoming season on hold amid an ongoing writers' strike. Following in the footsteps of "The Drew Barrymore Show" and "The Talk", the production is pausing its second season premiere which was scheduled for Monday, September 18. The decision, made at Jennifer Hudson's urging, has been confirmed by a source close to the production to Deadline.

Hosted by Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson and distributed by Warner Bros., "The Jennifer Hudson Show" features celebrity interviews, topical stories, community heroes, viral sensations, and music. Along with this show, both "The Drew Barrymore Show" and “The Talk” were set to premiere on the same date, September 18. However, they faced substantial criticism from the striking actors.

"Deadline" reported on September 4 that "The Drew Barrymore Show" would come back for a fourth season on September 18, which triggered a backlash. Defending her decision, Barrymore stated in an Instagram post that the decision was "bigger than me."

The controversy amplified over the past week with the "E.T." star facing severe criticism from the WGA and her fellow actors. A spokesperson for the guild voiced their disapproval of Barrymore continuing her show while her writers were on strike for a fair deal. Barrymore had tried to temper the situation with an apology video on Instagram, but the criticism persisted, leading to her removing the video.

"The Talk", which also planned to return, became a target of the WGA picketers. The CBS-produced show went dark in May due to the writers' strike.

Now, let's add a sprinkle of pepper to this soup of straight facts. Talk show hosts finding their feet in a writers' strike? It's a twist. Especially when you think about the vibrant dominion they hold in the daytime television landscape. After all, there's a reason they're dubbed the monarchs of morning coffee convos, isn't there?

Jennifer Hudson playing both the host and the advocate for her team is no surprise package to unwrap. Her rise from an 'American Idol' contestant to an Oscar winner has always been about integrity and empathy, and this move matches electric blue with the cool voice she's known for.

As for Drew Barrymore, her handling of the situation bringing her more enemies than fans has a certain poetic justice to it. The irony of the one known for making us laugh landing herself right in the middle of a comedic paradox of her own making shouldn't be overlooked.

And let's not forget "The Talk", which turned from being the talk of the town to the...silence? If talk show puns were brimstone, we'd all be in hell by now.

While the hosts are riding on seesaws of decisions and emotions, we're left here reveling in the unexpected plot twist. Looking for the next episode? Get your popcorn ready; it won't be aired: it’ll be lived.
