Logothetis Preps for 'Kickboxer: Armageddon' and 'Flying Shadow' Shoots
Acclaimed action director Dimitri Logothetis, best known for his work on indie martial arts films such as "Jiu Jitsu" and "Kickboxer: Retaliation", is gearing up to commence shooting on his two upcoming projects, "Kickboxer: Armageddon" and "Flying Shadow". The veteran director plans to film in locations across Mississippi and Malta. Scripts for both films were completed before recent labor strikes, and each is currently seeking the approval of a SAG-AFTRA Interim Agreement, with hopes of starting production come January.
"Kickboxer: Armageddon" serves as the concluding chapter of a trilogy reboot based on the iconic Jean-Claude Van Damme-led "Kickboxer" action franchise. The original 1989 film by Mark DiSalle and David Worth introduced audiences to Kurt Sloane (Van Damme), an initially reluctant fighter who is thrust into the brutal world of Muay Thai so as to seek justice for his injured brother. Subsequent entries in the reboot series also drafted Van Damme, albeit had the narrative centering on Kurt’s younger brother, David (Sasha Mitchell), particularly in the second and fifth installments.
Logothetis gives the beloved character of Kurt Sloane a fresh spin with star Alain Moussi shouldering the role in the reboot trilogy. In "Argmaeddon", Sloane grapples with a devastating reality after his wife and child fall victim to a fatal explosion aimed at him. Hurtling through the Malaysian underground boxing scene, Sloane is hell-bent on tracking and eliminating Master Durand’s twin brother Cesare, who is responsible. Logothetis co-wrote the script with Jim McGrath, both of whom penned the original reboot, with production bolstered by Joel Shapiro and Rob Hickman.
The second film, "Flying Shadow", ventures into action thriller territory, with ex-military Black Ops agent Travis Rawls and the commander of a Chinese private security force, Ling, joining forces to retrieve the stolen legendary sword ‘Flying Shadow’ and prevent a looming presidential life threat. Logothetis and McGrath are the creative minds behind this script as well, with Logothetis set to produce.
Logothetis recently wrapped up production on "Gunner", an action film starring Morgan Freeman and Luke Hemsworth. He's also held the reins on titles like "Kickboxer: Vengeance", "Kickboxer: Retaliation", and the Nicolas Cage starrer, "Jiu Jitsu", either writing, directing, producing, or a mix of all three. He additionally operates as President of Acme Rocket Fuel and Kings Road Entertainment.
Peter Meyer Management represents Logothetis and Alain Moussi by The Characters Talent Agency and Paul Hastings.
Well, can we declare it 'Logothetis Season' yet? With one explosive kickboxer plot ready to rumble and another flying into sword-thrust action, it seems Dimitri Logothetis is 'the' martial arts fix we all need these days. As someone who's given life to bean-bag-occupying, popcorn-munching, late-night movie sessions, the director appears all set to up the ante.
"Kickboxer: Armageddon" seems to promise a delicious revenge arc, imbued with raw emotive power. It’s classic Logothetis - paint a hero in a corner, then let him claw his way out through blood, sweat and jarring combat. I mean, who doesn’t enjoy watching a good guy perform occasional quite-literal ‘kick-assery’?
As for his rendezvous with the legendary ‘Flying Shadow’, it feels like Logothetis has swapped one end of the action spectrum for another, teasing us with an intriguing mashup of martial arts and international espionage. It almost seems like the kind of narrative Tom Clancy and Jackie Chan would produce at a wildly successful dinner party.
While his road to crafting these two entities isn't without its professional hurdles - negotiating a SAG-AFTRA agreement is about exciting as negotiating leftover pizza rationing with teenagers - the industry bet is that Dimitri Logothetis has got this covered. After all, we're talking about a man with a knack for reenergizing beloved franchises and serving up martial arts masterpieces - and don’t get me started on his talent for teaming up with everyone from Jean-Claude Van Damme to Nicolas Cage.
In essence, whether you’re a hardcore martial arts aficionado or an action-thriller enthusiast, keep your eyes peeled on this one, folks. A ‘Logothetis blockbuster double-header' is no cinematic event to take lightly.
