Marc Webb to Navigate 'Bermuda' for Skydance

A. Prentice

Skydance's long-gestating action-adventure project based on the mystical Bermuda Triangle, aptly titled 'Bermuda,' has finally secured a director. Marc Webb, widely recognized for his debut hit rom-com (500) Days of Summer and recent live-action version of Disney's Snow White, has officially signed on to helm the project. According to insiders, the film is in its early stages with no writer currently attached due to the ongoing WGA strike. The studio is expected to seek out a writer once the strike ends, with Webb poised to consult on the script, but not anticipated to co-write.

The plot details surrounding Bermuda are currently under wraps, adding to the allure and mystery associated with the enigmatic expanse of the Caribbean known for the baffling disappearance of planes and ships over time.

The film is set to emerge from the production cloak of Skydance, spearheaded by David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Don Granger. Aimee Rivera will provide the project's oversight for the studio, which is riding high on the success of its recent projects Top Gun: Maverick and Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One.

Besides his breakout feature film, Webb's portfolio extends to his directing credit on an episode of the Disney+ series Just Beyond. Webb's representative agency is CAA.

On its live-action slate, Skydance has many impressive undertakings in the pipeline for various platforms, such as Netflix and Apple TV+. These include Heart of Stone, Spy Kids: Armageddon, and The Old Guard 2 for Netflix; The Family Plan, The Gorge and Mayday for Apple TV+; and Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part Two.

Now for a dive into the Bermuda Triangle, not literally, of course. Marc Webb attaching his name to 'Bermuda' is a fascinating development. Webb, who's dabbled with romance, fantasy, and superheroes, is no stranger to venturing into different genres. Given his diverse track record, it's exciting to speculate just what kind of spin he'll put on a Bermuda Triangle story.

And let's not forget the enigma that is the Bermuda Triangle. Larger than France, and littered with unexplained disappearances, it’s a concept ripe for Hollywood to exploit. A plane disappears here, a ship there, and voila, you've got the makings of a tantalizing mystery - a recipe for box office gold, if leveraged innovatively.

Speaking of leveraging, we must tip our hats to Skydance. Fresh from hits like Top Gun: Maverick and Mission Impossible installments, it appears to be riding the wave of its momentum, venturing into the depths of unknown territories, quite literally. Juggling a diverse portfolio from Netflix's The Old Guard sequel to Apple TV+'s Mayday, their dance card is full, and those moves seem focused on variety, perhaps echoing Ellison's vision to create a diversified content portfolio that clicks across platforms.

So, from where I stand, or rather write, ‘Bermuda’ looks like a tantalizing prospect navigating the mysterious waters of Hollywood's future. Anchored by Webb's directorial prowess and backed by Skydance's productive dynamism, it seems poised to emerge on our radar, daring us not to look away. So will it sink or swim? As they say, only time (and the box office) will tell. But until that day, color me intrigued.
